A Spell for A Smith Chapter 39: A Partner

In A Spell for A Smith Chapter 39, Ivy recalls a childhood memory where she asks her mother about her father. Her mother tells her a story about how she used to travel all around the world with her friends, one among whom was her father. She says she and her friends used to take down bad guys bravely. However, one day they went against a powerful foe who they lost against and had to hide from. To hide, they split up, but her mother and her father stayed together. Her father took them away to a small village and built a cottage where they had her.
Tears gently flow down Ivy’s mother’s face, she says her father had gotten a letter from their old friends, asking for help and he had gone. Hugging her mother tight, Ivy slowly asks if the bad man got his father, to which her mother says yes. Worried, she asks if the bad man will get them too and her mother assures her that she is a clever witch. Still curious, Ivy asks what her father was to her mother, at that she laughs and says he was her husband. Upon her doubt about who’s a husband, her mother says it is someone who always has your back. Someone who makes you feel strong and mainly, someone you love with everything you have.
Getting back to the present, Ivy, blushing red, looks over at Brahm who is taking out peas with all his concentration. Noticing her gaze, he looks back and asks, making her jump. Saying she’ll go get more peas since they are almost done, Ivy rushes off. A Spell for A Smith Chapter 39 ends with Brahm, confused, checking the full basket of peas.
Chapter 40: Brahm’s Ascetic Room

A Spell for A Smith Chapter 40 opens with Ivy dreamingly watching Brahm as he works. Looking over, he asks if it’s actually fun for her and she assures him. He says he would like a break and asks what she wants to do. When she says she would like to talk, he urges her to go on. Immediately, she points to a door and asks what’s behind it. Surprised at her question, he says it’s his room. Ivy perks at that and hesitantly asks to see it. Taking her hand, he says she might be a bit disappointed and leads her in.
Ivy takes in the small room with a bed and a bookshelf. He says it’s not much and she calls it ascetic. Leaning on the doorframe, he says she wouldn’t find much here but she says she’s learning a lot more. Peering at the bookshelf, she notes that he’s quite well-read and that he likes comfort. She concludes that this is the room of a solitary man who looks gruff but is soft inside. Blushing, he compliments her observational skills which she brushes off, saying she already knows him. Plopping on the bed, she hesitantly asks where his actual home is.
Brahm Tries to Open Up

At Ivy’s question, Brahm sighs deeply and sits beside her. She immediately says he doesn’t have to talk about it but he says he wants to. Taking her hand, he says he wants his past to stay far away when he’s with her. He slowly says he had a home and two brothers. Fumbling, he says he had to leave. Ivy says she can imagine how hard it is to have stories that are hard to tell. Squeezing his hand, she assures him he can tell it whenever he’s fine. Thanking him for confiding in her, she quickly changes the topic to let her see him work again. Brahm laughs at that, concluding A Spell for A Smith Chapter 40.
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 41: Bear Traps

She feels overwhelmed and wishes the forge were nearer. Just as she loses control, she feels a hand on her shoulder. Jon worriedly looks over at her, asking if she’s fine and leading her to his bar. Grateful she found a familiar face, she covered her face and followed him.
Inside the bar, Jon asks Thom to get Brahm and tends to Ivy. He asks if the blood on her hands is hers, at which she realizes she still has the fox’s blood on her. She explains the situation to him and he sympathizes, calling hunters barbaric. Just then Brahm rushes in and hugs her tight, asking if she’s alright. Upon knowing what happened, he apologizes for not telling her sooner about the hunter. Ivy brushes his apologies away, saying he’s not at fault. Brahm sees her storming up to him and Jon worriedly asks if they should stop her. Shaking his head, he says they shouldn’t take this away from her.
Holding up a bear trap, Ivy asks the hunter if this is his. Smug, he says it looks familiar, making her angrier and say it’s disgusting and cowardly. Yelling, she tells him to get his traps out of her forest, throwing them at his feet. The hunter looks around at the gathered folk and says, “Or what”. He accuses her of tampering with his property used for livelihood. Peering down at her, he says one of the two of them is certainly disgusting. At that, Brahm interferes, saying it’s not the right way to talk to a lady. Jon backs him up and the hunter gets visibly agitated.
The hunter says he can put his stuff wherever he wants. At that, Ivy’s hands start to glow and she tries hard to control her magic. Brahm notices, but she warns the hunter off and walks away. She explains she cannot just leave them be and he tells her to come by his place if she changes her mind. He kisses her deeply and lets her go, signaling Thistle to keep an eye on her.
Ivy goes to the house and they let her in. Wary at first, she slowly makes her remedies and helps around. After hours of labor, a child is born and she feels delighted. Still shaken, she tells him she can heal herself but he scolds her, making her laugh.

Saying he doesn’t want to make a mess in Thom’s bar, he tells the hunter to go away so far that he won’t ever see him again. He lets him go and the hunter runs, embarrassed.
