In A Spell for a Smith Chapter 21, Brahm is relishing in the aroma of his fire, made with a bark that Ivy had enchanted. He recalls her giving him the bark and fretting about it being useless but he immediately loves it. Seeing him happy, she gets excited and goes off to get him more enchanted items. He smiles at how well she read him, seeing that she added sleeping draught too in the items. He is pulled back to the present when a villager yells at him.
The villager accuses Brahm of using the witch’s “filthy magic”. Annoyed, he glares at the villager as he goes on about him getting swindled and saying he will not buy from him again unless he stops using her items. Shrugging, Brahm turns around, saying, “Suit yourself”. Shocked, the villager protests at which Brahm raises the hammer in his hand, warning him to never show up again. Flinching at his glare, the villager retreats, saying he will spread the word. Smirking, Brahm goes back to his work.
Meanwhile, in her home, Ivy is kneading dough. However, she loses focus and her heart beats faster. Giving up, she looks to Thistle for help, saying how she can’t seem to catch her breath and thinking she’s coming down with a fever. Confirmed she was just getting a cold, and she set to work on remedies but remarked that her symptoms weren’t unpleasant. Placing her hand over her heart, she says it’s very fluttery and she touches the golden bands in her head, saying her thoughts are nice too. A Spell for a Smith Chapter 21 ends with Ivy sighing happily, thinking of Brahm, quickly catching herself and looking for remedies.
Chapter 22: A Run In
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 22, opens with Brahm riding his horse on a pleasant morning. Apologizing to his horse, he thinks of how rarely he does something pleasant just for him. He hears a snap and is startled. He turns to see Ivy, as startled as he is, her hands glowing, ready to attack. She quickly puts her magic off realizing it’s just Brahm, and greets him. Hating himself for scaring her, he apologizes and hops off his horse. He notes she has tied the bands differently and admires them. She fumbles, at a loss for words, and quickly thanks him again and keeps quiet, cursing herself inwardly. She wonders if she will scare him off too with her lack of communication. Thistle goes over to him and rubs her head on his leg, making him bend down and pat him.
Smiling, Ivy walks over to Brahm’s horse, asking him to introduce them. He apologizes for not doing so earlier and introduces Feldspar and Ivy. Admiring, she pats his head softly. Brahm asks why she’s so far from home and Ivy explains she and Thistle have been out foraging since it was spring again. Fiddling, he asks if she would like company. Heart beating faster, she says she would like that. They walk together, Brahm asking about her foraged items, concluding A Spell for a Smith Chapter 22.
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 23: A Social Call
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 23 opens with Ivy delivering the orders she received. The people of the village barely look at her when they collect their orders, yelling at her if she says too much or talks too loud. After a series of deliveries and orders, she feels mentally drained and is about to head back. She hears Brahm call out her name and invite her into the forge. Shocked, she questions reality. Going over, she asks him if he’s sure about what he just did since the villagers will hate him. Ignoring her question, he tells her to sit down and sets to make tea.
Ivy, settling in, realizes she’s never been to social calls and decides she likes them. The two have tea and Brahm tells her he and Jon will be out of town for a couple of weeks since they are out of supplies. Smiling, she tells him since Jon’s joining him she wouldn’t have to make another charm. Smirking, he says he wouldn’t reject one and asks her what he should bring for her. Panicking, she quickly says he doesn’t have to trouble himself for her. Teasing her, he says if she doesn’t tell him he’ll just get one thing of everything for her. A Spell for a Smith Chapter 23 ends with Brahm listing the items he would get for her and the two laughing over it.
Chapter 24: Ivy Meets Jon
In A Spell for a Smith Chapter 24, Ivy wonders why Brahm had told her that he would be out of town. She also thinks why she’s sitting outside where she can see the road. Meanwhile, by the forge, Brahm and Jon check the loaded wagon and prepare for their journey. Thom comes over asking pointedly if everyone said their goodbyes. Rolling his eyes, Brahm tells him he did say he was leaving. Thom tells him to be more romantic in the future, swooping Jon and kissing him as an example.
As Jon and Brahm head out to the woods, they are stopped by a voice calling out to Brahm. Perking up immediately, he turns to see Ivy running towards them, she is about to say she was glad to catch him till she notices Jon. She quickly clams up, forgetting he wasn’t alone, but Brahm shoves Jon away, assuring her he’s nobody. She fumbles and tells him she made him another charm. Delighted he thanks her and admires the work while Jon watches him pointedly. The two chat, only to be interrupted by a loud cough from Jon. Annoyed, the dwarf glares at him, and introduces the two. At being introduced, Jon becomes extremely polite, bowing and greeting her, saying he’s heard a lot about her.
Blushing, Ivy asks what exactly he heard at which Brahm tries to interfere. Clamping his mouth shut, Jon assures her only good stuff and that Brahm holds her in the “highest regard”. Both of them turn deep red at that and Ivy says they should head on. He holds her hand, saying his goodbyes, and the two head off. A Spell for a Smith Chapter 24 ends with Jon saying she’s very pretty as Brahm admires his charm.
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 25: Brahm’s Feelings
In A Spell for a Smith Chapter 25, Brahm worries about what to get Ivy. Jon chides him for getting soap and tells him he should get something that symbolizes his thoughts. Brushing him off, he tells him that if he had anything to say to her he would say it with words. The two hunt for something to gift her and Jon notes how he has never seen the dwarf like this. As they eat, Jon tells him he never expected him to give hair rings to someone and that he’s both happy and worried. Smiling, he thinks that he too never expected it. He recalls her asking for the hair rings and thinking how, for dwarves, it declares their intention to court someone.
Brahm explains he would never call Ivy his lover without her knowledge but admits that he would like her to be. Jon reminds him never to overthink love. The dwarf says he knows exactly what he feels for her and that he had made the hair rings knowing what to do. He says the problem is that he’s scared he will terrify her. At Jon’s shocked expression, he hangs his head down and says he always thinks about her and wants to see and be with her at all times. Looking up, he says the whole thing is bloody scary. The other guy insists he should talk to her about this and says he doesn’t think she would say no. A Spell for a Smith Chapter 25 ends with Ivy, back at home, wondering how Brahm’s trip is.
Chapter 26: Ivy’s Feelings
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 26 opens with Ivy washing clothes by the river. She thinks to herself how much she misses Brahm and it scares her. She wonders how can she be sure about it since she has been very lonely and he is the only person who has been kind to her. Out of answers, she looks to her side at her mother, asking her for advice. Her mother tells her a person’s character is very unpredictable and tells her they could be as backstabbing as they were sweet. She also tells her that she’s smart and can easily know a person’s true nature. The mirage of her mother disappears, saying that people will always show you who they are.
Ivy thinks of Brahm’s actions and his kindness throughout everything. Smiling, she takes her laundry basket and gets up. She thinks to herself how this can be scary but at the same time, she would truly regret not choosing him, concluding A Spell for a Smith Chapter 26.
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 27: Eavesdropping
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 27 opens with Ivy packing a lunch and heading to town to see Brahm, surprised she’s actually visiting a friend. She holds the pack close, wondering if she is smothering him but decides not to second guess and heads off. She slowly heads to the forage, gathering courage, only to find it empty. Surprised at the disappointment that filled her, she decided to leave the pack for him. She hears voices and excitedly turns. She is shocked to see Brahm shirtless and, blushing hard, hides. Overhearing them, she hears Jon teasing Brahm about seeing his wee witch and Brahm scolding him. She hears the guy threatening him not to back out now and the dwarf confirming he will tell her. Jon apologizes for being nosy but says he’s never seen Brahm so happy and wishes things go well.
Ivy hears all of this, her heart beating fast, and wonders what she truly feels. Deciding she needs to think, she dashes off, bumping into the table as she does so. The tools on the table clatter to the floor and Brahm quickly heads in, looking about. A Spell for a Smith Chapter 27 ends with him finding the packed food on the table.
Chapter 28: KEEP AWAY
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 28 opens with Brahm struggling to find his way to Ivy’s home. He looks up at the new charms hanging about and wonders if something happened while he was away. He sees a charm made with her hair and picks it up. Holding it close, he thinks of her hair and the way he braided it and recalls the path again. Meanwhile, Ivy is cutting up vegetables, thinking of her feelings. She is scared of disappointing him and losing him, resulting in isolation again. Terrified of losing him, she thinks to herself she is not ready for that conversation yet. Just as she thinks that she hears a knock that startles her.
Panicking, Ivy rushes to the door and opens it to find a smiling Brahm. Before he could greet her, she demanded what he was doing there. He stares at her, at which she rephrases her question, asking how he found her. Shrugging he says he just did. Hands trembling, she invites him in, avoiding eye contact. A Spell for a Smith Chapter 28 ends with Brahm walking in and the door slamming shut.
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 29: Confessions
In A Spell for a Smith Chapter 29, Brahm asks if Ivy is fine. Bursting, she says she cannot fathom how he found her since she put up great charms to ensure no one can find her. Hurt, he asks if she is trying to keep him away. At that Ivy flinches and slowly says she just needed time. Frustrated, he asks her for what she needs. She fumbles, not having an answer, and he says he doesn’t know how he found her home. Taking his things, he apologizes and says he will leave and that he never wants to make her uncomfortable. She watches as he heads to the door, conflicted. She shouts, “BRAHM, WAIT!!”, making him pause.
Holding her head, Ivy explains she always gets nervous whenever Brahm’s around. She also feels faint and afraid in the oddest way. Realizing, Brahm slowly walks over to her as she admits she’s panicking and doesn’t know what to do. Trembling, she tells him she doesn’t want him to stay away at all and that scares her. He gently takes her hand and places it over his hammering heart. She brightens at his heart rate, as erratic as hers, and he assures her he is scared as well.
Laughing, Ivy asks Brahm what they do now and that she has never been like this before. Holding onto her hand, he says he would like to see her and assumes she too would like that. Brahm suggests they just keep seeing each other often for now. Ivy smiles and says she would like that, at which he slowly kisses her hand. Leaving her red hot and flabbergasted, he walks over to his bag to get her present, concluding A Spell for a Smith Chapter 29.
Chapter 30: Brahm and Ivy
A Spell for a Smith Chapter 30 opens with Brahm and Ivy having tea, the black tea, and the book of botany he gifted her on the table. The scene shifts to the two walking outside, telling him how she loves foraging. As they forage together, he asks her why she makes medicines for such hating and ungrateful people. Nervous, she tells him it’s an easier way to get things she cannot forge for like flour, cheese, and dishes. He accepts the answer despite knowing there is more to it. Ivy explains she wouldn’t be a witch without doing witchcraft and that even though people are ungrateful, they give her a purpose. As she talks, she climbs a tree, thinking how she cannot simply exist without leaving a mark. Snapping a small branch, she thinks to herself it would be more awful to be forgotten than to endure this hatred.
As Ivy climbs down the tree, Brahm reaches out his arms, steadying her. He tells her to be careful and that he would hate for anything to happen to her. Dropping his arms, he says he can relate since that is why he smiths too. Asking if they have everything they need, he starts to walk back, leaving a wonderstruck Ivy. Back at home, Ivy talks about foraging to Brahm, saying it’s a useful skill to get by with. He watches her in fascination, thinking how she’s too good for this place. He silently promises her that someday, he will take her to someplace where she will be valued, concluding A Spell for a Smith Chapter 30.
