Ijin

In Teenage Mercenary Chapter 1, Dayeon, a first-year student, watches as her classmates gush over a new, attractive third-year student. She thinks of her brother, Ijin, who was presumed dead but returned home after 10 years. A bully pulls Dayeon from her thoughts and demands her gym uniform. When she hesitates, the bully slaps her. The scene shifts to Ijin’s classroom, where the teacher introduces him. As he walks to his seat, a student tries to trip him, but Ijin stops just in time, recalling Major Kang’s advice to avoid fights in Korea. Watching the student closely, he pays heed to the advice. He silently moves on and sits next to Yeongchan, who warns him about the troublemakers Jaehyoung and Hyeokjin.

During class, Ijin reflects on his violent past and appreciates the peace around him. After school, Dayeon is surprised to see him waiting for her. They walk home together, awkwardly adjusting to their new reality. As they walk, a classmate, sitting in a cafe, mocks Dayeon, mistaking Ijin for her boyfriend. Dayeon quickly clarifies he is her brother. Ijin assesses the boys with the girl, making them mad. Remembering the Major’s advice, he tries to walk away, but the bully grabs his collar and attempts to slap him. Dayeon, terrified, apologizes on Ijin’s behalf. Seeing his sister terrified, Ijin slaps the bully’s hand away and covers Dayeon’s face with his coat, asking her to wait. He then elbows the bully, knocking him out. Teenage Mercenary Chapter 1 ends with Ijin regretting that he broke his promise to the Major.

Chapter 2: Ijin's Grandfather
Ijin’s Grandfather

Teenage Mercenary Chapter 2 opens with Major Kang worrying about Ijin’s first day of school, back at the camp. However, he believes his lessons on life in Korea would have prepared him and that he would be doing fine. The scene shifts to Ijin, knocking out the bully in a single hit and disappointed he’s out in one hit. He watches the other boy who got out of his seat. Before he could move, Ijin lands a blow to his stomach, sending him flying. He then glares at the girl who had mocked his sister, just then, Dayeon, taking off his coat, asks what happened. Ijin, deciding to drop it, apologizes to his sister for startling her and walk back home together.

Dayeon asks if he beat up those guys and Ijin, hesitating, says yes. She notes how he doesn’t seem like the type to pick fights. She warns him to not stare at people since its rude and will get him in uncomfortable situations. He tells her its rude to stare back at his place too, at that, she asks why he did that. Ijin says they seemed to cause her trouble which is why he did that, making Daeyoun melt inside.

Ijin’s Home

At home, Ijin offers to do the dishes, much to his grandfather’s objection. He then asks about his first day of school and Ijin, pausing, says, “It was good”. That night, he recalls his first day of coming back to Korea. How happy his grandfather seemed and the number of dishes he made, not knowing what Ijin likes. As he sleeps, he dreams of the plane crash that had separated him and jolts awake, panting. He then checks the time and goes out to his room to see his sister cooking. She leaves for school, telling him to have the food on the table.

Back at school, the girl from the cafe tells Dayeon’s bully that the newbie is her brother. She thinks if they should stop bullying her now and then remembers that Huijin’s (the bully) brother basically runs the school. They see Dayeon by the stairs and hits her head. They take her to the back of the school and beat her up for what happened yesterday. Huijin says he beat up her brother’s friends yesterday and that they would be getting their revenge today. Terrified for her brother, Daeyon takes off to warn him. By the time she reaches his class, Huijin’s brother is already there. Ijin, startled, gets up, seeing his sister beaten up, concluding Teenage Mercenary Chapter 2.

Teenage Mercenary Chapter 3 opens with the bullies, annoyed by how unperturbed Ijin looks, deciding to talk to him. Meanwhile, Yeongchan knows about Ijin’s sister and tells him that her sister is bullied a lot. Surprised he asks why no one does anything about it. The other boy says the bully’s brother is one of the main thugs called Gisu Kim. Ijin remembers her sister telling her grandpa everything is great at school and his grandpa saying he never had to worry about her. Just then, the classroom door slams open, and Gisu and the gang enter. He calls Ijin out and is unnerved by the way he glares. Just then Daeyon dashes in and Gisu refers to her as Huijin’s errand girl.

Daeyon, crying, apologizes for dragging him into this. Seeing his sister in tears, Ijin says she has nothing to be sorry for. He then punches the bully in front of him, knocking him out, and says, “They’re the ones who should be”. Ijin quickly deals with Gisu’s goons, knocking them out in one hit and stops when he reaches him. In Teenage Mercenary Chapter 4, Gisu attacks Ijin with a side kick, but Ijin blocks it and counters with a punch to Gisu’s face, leaving him shocked and bleeding. Ijin then knocks Gisu out with a kick to the face, leaving Huijin dumbfounded and terrified that Ijin might hit her too. Just then, Dayeon grabs Ijin’s sleeve, begging him to stop, and he agrees, deciding to walk her back to her homeroom. The class is left in shock, and Huijin is embarrassed by her brother and his gang being knocked out.

As they walk, Dayeon apologizes for dragging Ijin into her mess again, but he reassures her that it’s how it should be. He explains that when he was overseas, no one cared about anyone but themselves, except for their family. He admits that even though he doesn’t remember her much, she is still his family. Dayeon takes this in, then notices everyone staring and quickly thanks her brother before rushing off to class.

Back in his class, Jaehyoung and Hyeokjin, the bullies, fawn over Ijin, but he ignores them and returns to his seat. Meanwhile, Gisu is livid about being beaten by a new kid. His sister tries to console him, saying they were caught off guard and can’t let one guy beat them. Frustrated, Gisu yells at his sister to fight Ijin herself. She storms out in tears, followed by her friend, and, upon reaching homeroom, tells Dayton she’s lucky. Dayeon remains silent, further annoying Huijin. Teenage Mercenary Chapter 4 ends with Huijin deciding she won’t change just because of Ijin.

Deep in thought, she doesn’t notice her brother waiting for her, calling her. Startled back into the present, Daeyon asks if he was waiting for her again and Ijin, smiling, admits he doesn’t know the way back home. She tells him they have to stop by the store since grandpa loves it when she makes dinner for him. At the grocery store, Daeyon asks if he had a girlfriend back home. He says he never did, which surprises her and says he was busy. He then asks if she had a boyfriend and she quickly says no and that she too was busy.

At home, Ijin’s grandfather gives him a new phone with their numbers saved in it, surprising Dayeon. Ijin is amazed and thanks his grandfather, who apologizes for not getting Dayeon a new phone. Later, Ijin texts Major Kang from his new phone, surprising the Major.

Not So Anonymous Goons

The next day, Ijin sees Dayeon dash off to school, telling him to eat and leave the dishes. While running to school, three masked girls kick Dayeon and demand an apology for hurting one of their ankles. Even after she apologizes, they slap her, drag her to a karaoke room, beat her up, and leave her there.

At school, the homeroom teacher, surprised, notes Dayeon’s absence. Meanwhile Huijin’s friend stresses about getting caught and Huijin reminds her they had nothing to do with her. After school, Ijin, surprised, assumes she went home already. He gets home and knocks on Dayeon’s room. Hearing her voice, he asks her to let him in, knowing something’s wrong. She brushes it off as a fever and he decides to get her some medicines. However, he freezes when he sees his sister’s shoes stained with blood, ending Teenage Mercenary Chapter 5.

Teenage Mercenary Chapter 6 opens with Ijin tending to his sister’s wounds which she had apparently got from falling down the stairs. He asks if he should take her to the doctor but she quickly says no. She imagines filing a complaint against Huijin when she recognized her on the basis of voice alone. Knowing no one would believe her, she stays silent. Ijin makes sure she’s fine and she says she doesn’t want grandpa to worry since he has a weak heart. This surprises him and he assures he’ll see to it. As he walks away, his sister thanks him, making him smile.

The next scene shows Gisu and his goons at a bar, planning how to take down Ijin. He decides to attack Ijin with everything they’ve got. Just then his sister’s call pops up and she tells him she beat up Dayeon to keep things steady for him. Laughing, he praises his sister and says they’ll take care of him. Exactly then, Ijin walks into the bar, shocking Gisu. Before he could say a word, Ijin slams down the first goon, followed by the second. The others scramble up and run towards him just to get knocked out. Done with everyone else, Ijin faces Gisu. Huijin, still on call, demands to know what’s going on. Ijin calls out his name, making him freeze. Teenage Mercenary Chapter 6 ends with him saying, “I thought I told you to leave my sister alone”.

Teenage Mercenary Chapter 7: Final Warning

Chapter 7: Gisu Vs Ijin
Gisu Vs Ijin

In Teenage Mercenary Chapter 7, Gisu wonders what the hell Ijin is. Ijin asks him what his sister ever did to them, making the other guy stumble and say he doesn’t know anything. Gisu then throws a glass at him, trying to catch him off guard, but fails. Grabbing a bottle, he hurtles towards Ijin, just to get beaten up. Panting hard, he looks up at him, wondering how he’s not even out of breath. He knocks the bottle out of his hand and grabs him by his neck, landing a kick to his side. Gisu collapses to the ground and Ijin presses his elbow against the other guy’s neck. He gives him a final warning, saying he will be back if he even hears a rumor that he went near his sister. He finally lets him go, assuring him he won’t hesitate next time.

Outside, Huijin and her friend head to the bar, wondering what happened, just to see Ijin walk out. Panicking, she yells, “Don’t come any closer”, making Ijin look up and note her presence. As he glares at her, his grandpa calls and he says he’s on his way home. Glaring at Huijin one last time, he walks off. She goes in and shouts at her brother for losing to that bastard again. Gisu, raging, yells at her and tells her to stay away from Daeyon. He warns her if she goes near that girl again he will personally beat her up.

Concerns

As Ijin walks home, he is surprised to find his grandpa outside, waiting for him. The two sit on a bench and his grandpa says he saw Daeyon injured and that he doesn’t think its an accident. He admits how he struggled to raise Daeyon since he had no idea and that he was always out working to provide for them. He says that Daeyon had done more for him than he could do for her. Disappointed, he says she wouldn’t confide in him at all, and it hurts him seeing her like this. At that Ijin assures him that she loves him a lot and promises he will watch over her at school. Teenage Mercenary Chapter 7 ends with his grandpa saying he is happy Ijin’s back.

Chapter 8: Gangsters

Teenage Mercenary Chapter 8 opens with Gisu’s father scolding him in the hospital. His mother on the other hand, yells at his father, protecting Gisu and telling him to find the brute that beat their son up. Once their parents are gone, Gisu scolds her for telling their parents as she walks off. Outside their mother tells their father she told Mr. Cha (a gangster) of what happened and his father is annoyed she involved such big people for a petty case. The next scene shows Mr. Cha’s goons annoyed at having to sort a teenager’s shit. Mr. Cha, annoyed, wishes he could opt out from meddling in kid’s affairs.

At home, Ijin hears his grandpa arguing with some goons at the door. He steps out of his room to find the goons looking for him and reassures his grandpa that he knows them. Outside, the goons confront Ijin about messing with Gisu. Ijin quickly takes action, knocking away a goon trying to hold him down and elbowing his face. Mr. Cha watches in amazement as Ijin charges at the goons and beats them up, impressed by his skills. After knocking out the goons, Ijin turns to Mr. Cha, who acknowledges that Ijin is not an average high school student. Ijin dodges Cha’s blows and blocks a strong punch that makes him skid back. Surprised by Ijin’s strength, Cha gets ready for another round, and Ijin prepares to face him again.

Ijin uses Cha’s own moves against him, getting him in his weak points and ending with an uppercut aimed true. Cha collapses, shocked he got beaten by a teenager. He notes how Ijin isn’t even rattled and thinks to himself that the kids messed with the wrong person.

Mr. Cha’s Company

The scene shifts to Gisu’s father’s company. His mother, impatient, asks him to call Mr. Cha and ask what’s going on. Exactly then, they get a call from him and Mr. Kim apologizes on behalf of his wife for burdening him with this. Mr. Cha apologizes and says that the kids meddled with the wrong person. This startles everyone in the room and as Mr. Cha talks, the door opens to Ijin, hands bloodied and bodyguards knocked out behind him, concluding Teenage Mercenary Chapter 8.

These chapters introduce Ijin as a character with a violent, mercenary past who must navigate the intricacies of his new life in Korea. His desire to keep his sister safe from bullying brings him into violent confrontations, showcasing his formidable skills and strong protective instincts. In the early chapters, Ijin is depicted as a reluctant fighter, trying to avoid conflict despite his incredible strength. His bond with Dayeon is at the heart of the story, as he tries to make up for the lost years of being presumed dead. The tension builds with each encounter as Ijin is forced into more fights, from defending his sister against bullies to taking on Gisu and his gang. The action is intense, and Ijin's battles are both physically and emotionally charged, especially when it comes to protecting Dayeon from further harm. The stakes rise when Ijin is confronted by the dangerous figures from Gisu's family and the involvement of gangsters like Mr. Cha. These chapters highlight Ijin’s struggle to balance his past as a mercenary with his present, where he must hold back for his sister’s sake while still dealing with threats head-on.
