Marionetta Chapter 9: Julia’s Reality Check

In Marionetta Chapter 9, Julia wakes up, hating to find out the circus wasn’t a nightmare. Bob offers her breakfast which she declines. Taking an orange and ignoring the people, she goes to the balcony and thinks of her home. She wonders how she can ever make it back home. As she eats, a letter she wrote to her father gets caught in the wind. Appearing out of nowhere, Dotty catches it quickly and reads it before Julia can stop her. Making sure the letter does not contain anything about them or their abnormalities, she apologizes and returns it. Upon her asking, Bob and Dotty say she can mail it at their next stop.
As Dotty and Bob glean about Julia’s debut, they get interrupted by Tonny yelling at Sahed. Tonny screams at him for crossing boundaries and reminds him who the circus leader is. Julia suddenly remembers she had blamed Sahed for her joining the circus. As the circus master yells at him, Sahed cuts him off saying he’s too old for the job and should be careful about people taking away his position. Sahed gets up and warns the master to get his hands off him. Resolve to weaken, he reminds him he’s toying with human lives and that he cannot let him do so. At that the guy scoffs, saying he’s one to talk about toying with lives.
As Tonny walks away, Julia, shocked, realizes she was right. She watches Sahed and thinks of the contract he had made her sign. She thinks of how he wants the circus master dead her head whirls. Marionetta Chapter 9 ends with Julia, determined to find out why he wants Tonny dead.

Julie exclaims about her outfit, expressing her dislike but is cut off by Dotty. Throwing an arm around the two girls, she drags them off for work. Taking them to the workshop, she shows them around and Julie is surprised at the lack of weirdness. Dotty asks about the play at which both the girls say they cannot perform only make them. She then suggests making their miniature forms that they could sell as souvenirs and the girls set to work.
That night, the circus van stops to unload and Julie, spending all day carving, decides to help them out. She steps out and takes in the huge city. She tells Bob it’s beautiful and he says there are bigger cities to come. Excited, she asks if they will visit the capital at which he says there are too many militias there. The two look at the map and are joined by Finn carrying boxes. Julie offers to help with the rest and dashes to the caravan. Just as she goes to get the boxes she is pulled back by Sahed. Pushing her against a wall, he tells her Anthon is very sure that Sahed made her sign the contract. Marionetta Chapter 10 ends with him asking her who she thinks made her sign it.
Marionetta Chapter 11: A Successful Sale

In Marionetta Chapter 11, Julie’s head spins but she makes up her mind. She asks Sahed why he wants Tonny dead. Surprised, he leans in close and whispers he would tell her but asks if he can trust her. Unnerved, she pushes him off her and dashes off, saying she should be the one to ask that. As she runs away, she is pulled back roughly, causing her to fall. Looking back she remembers the string that ties her to the circus.
The next scene shows Julie and Kamille being praised for their puppet-making skills. The whole circus falls in love with their miniature self and buys them all. Proud of their sales, Dotty suggests the two girls go out and enjoy the rest of the day. Turning to Kamille, Julia asks what they should do and is surprised to hear she wants to see Sahed and Rainah’s performance. She catches up with her, trying to talk her out of it but her efforts are in vain. The other girl says the Ah’kon (three-eyed people) can see ghosts and that intrigues her.
Julia knows she has to stop her but doesn’t know what to tell her. Eyes watering, she grabs Kamille’s hand and begs her not to go. She says she knows there is something dark about them and it’s not just because they are Ah’kon. Shocked, Kamille says she won’t stay away from them unless she has a strong reason but says she won’t go there today. Relaxing, Julia thanks her and agrees when the other girl asks for caramel popcorn. Marionetta Chapter 11 ends with a scene showing Rainah as a fortune teller.
Chapter 12: Opportunity

Marionetta Chapter 12 opens with Julia and Kamille mesmerized by Dotty’s performance. Done with her performance, she thanks the girls when they praise her and tells them to sit and watch the rest of the show. Julia then looks over at Tonny who announces the next performance and she narrows her eyes. Kamille notes he has a certain charisma while on stage while the other girl is unnerved. As Tonny walks out of the stage, he sees Julia and smiles and waves. Feeling nauseous thinking of her pact, she runs out, leaving Kamille.
Outside she falls on her knees, not knowing what to do and wanting to run away. Just then military men walk beside her and she sees her chance. She runs towards them, saying she has to raise a complaint. However, just then, someone yells from behind and everyone gets distracted. They look over to the fortune teller’s tent where the customer accuses Rainah of cheating her. She demands her money back to which Rainah says she just didn’t like the truth about her future.
Angered beyond control, the customer slaps Rainah, causing the mask covering her third eye to fall off. The military men hold back the customer while another tries to help Rainah up. She tries to cover her face but the officer pulls her up, revealing her third eye. Marionetta Chapter 12 ends with the people shocked at the sight of an Ah’Kon.
Marionetta Chapter 13: Threats

In Marionetta Chapter 13, Tonny announces the magic performance of Sahed and Rainah. Sahed backstage worries about his partner who is never late. Tonny, on the stage, is confused by his non-appearance and turns backstage to see him take off. Shocked, he quickly covers it up and announces the next show by the mimes. Meanwhile, near the fortune stand, everyone is shocked and disgusted by Rainah. Julia, knowing this is how it should be, watches painfully. The officer pulls Rainah’s hair hard, cuffing her and mocking her weak attempt at infiltration. Just then, Kamille appears and defends her.
Getting in between Ah’Kon and the officer, Kamille demands them to leave her alone. Among the crowd, Sahed slowly slips in, his hand inside a small pouch. Kamille defends the other girl at which the officer takes out a baton and threatens them. Shocked, Julia tries to step in but is stopped by Sahed, he assures her he’ll take care of it and steps in. Twice the size he originally was, he grabs the baton from the officer. Accusing the officer of bothering ladies, he warns them to get out while they can, concluding Marionetta Chapter 13.
Chapter 14: Definitely Not Spying

Marionetta Chapter 14 opens with the officer and Sahed about to brawl. However, Tonny, with the entire circus, appears in the nick of time and eases the officers. Lifting his hat, he says the three eyes are just makeup and erases his fake third eye. The audience quickly believes it but the officers say they want to try and erase Rainah’s so-called makeup. At that, Sahed grabs the officer by the collar and dares him to lay a finger on her. Unnerved, the officer starts quoting the law but sees the whole circus troop and gets uneasy. The second officer drags the first one away and they leave with a warning.
In their wake, Julia realizes she just lost an opportunity. She then looks up to see Tonny dragging Sahed off, saying they need to talk. She follows them, curious to know what’s going on. Slowly approaching the door they went into, she peeks through the curtain. Just then her head hits another and she’s shocked to find Kamille. Shushing her when she asks, she gets back to spying.
Tonny, exhausted, tells Sahed he has got to stop acting out by himself and inform him if there’s an issue. The Ah’Kon says his massiveness is what scared them off and not the director’s senseless chatter. Getting mad, he says the government will shut them down if he went around beating officers to a pulp. At that, Sahed calls Tonny the worst jailer of them all. Pointing at him menacingly, he says he’s worse than the government, and that he knows about the attic. Flustered, Tonny looks around and warns him to keep it down. Shocked, Julia recalls the monster of the attic. Marionetta Chapter 14 ends with someone catching Julia and Kamille spying.
Marionetta Chapter 15: The Ah’Kon

In Marionetta Chapter 15, Rainah drags the two girls and pushes them into the room, announcing what they did. Startled, Tonny demands to know how long they were there, and Sahed smirks, suggesting a grave punishment. Julia notes he’s back to his normal size before accusing the director of lying. She tells him he lied to the officers about the Ah’Kon, earning a snide comment from Sahed. Yelling, Tonny asks her if he should have just let Rainah get hurt. That stops her short and he asks if her blood doesn’t boil from seeing that sort of abuse. He tells her he knows she feels out of place but explains that the Ah’Kon are humans too. As he talks, Rainah destroys a teapot, startling them all. Sahed quickly gets to her side, and she says she slipped.
Rainah asks them to leave her and Sahed alone and, apologizing, Tonny walks to the door. As Julia is about to follow, she notices certain seals on the table. She tries to get a better look but Sahed cuts her off, reminding her she was leaving. Kamille calls out to her and she quickly turns and leaves. She whispers to the other girl, asking if Kamille saw what she did. Tonny cuts them off, hesitantly telling Julia not to call them ‘three eyes’ again. Surprised, she asks why not at which he tells her it’s not right to reduce a human by their physical traits. Smiling, he says they are not to be frightened off despite what she was told her whole life. Julia thinks of her interaction with Sahed and dumbfoundedly stares at the director.
Guilt-tripped

That night, Dotty drops by their room, asking if they are ready for the bonfire. She is surprised to see Julia in her pajamas as the girl says she is not gonna spend an extra moment with them. Dotty turns to Kamille and asks her to persuade her friend, which she wholeheartedly takes on. The door closes and Kamille asks her if she’s still thinking about the Ah’Kon. She says she feels she was wrong and asks if she should apologize to Rainah. Kamille agrees with that immediately, guilt-tripping Julia.
Julia immediately asks about Sahed being twice his size and asks if Rainah could do that too. Trying to prove they are untrustworthy, she is surprised when Kamille suddenly gets up. Saying she has an errand to run, she goes off, calling out to Julia to come to the party. Conflicted, Julia looks at the letter she was writing to her father and wishes she could ask for advice, concluding Marionetta Chapter 15.
Marionetta Chapter 16: Kamille’s Disappointment

In Marionetta Chapter 16, the circus troop is enjoying the bonfire when a member asks to talk to Tonny privately. As the two go off, Kamille arrives and greets Dotty, asking if Rainah and Sahed are there. Annoyed, Finn says they are too high and mighty for their bonfires. The girl chides him for saying that and tells Kamille they don’t usually come to parties. Deflated, she walks away, thinking she cannot ever get close to them. Sitting on the ground, she wonders if Finn is right and if they do not like associating themselves with non Ah’Kon. She admires the pretty flowers on the ground and notes how she wouldn’t find them in her hometown.
A Costume Designer?

Just then Rainah appears and observes Kamille likes flowers. Startled, the other girl falls and the Ah’Kon says she likes her embroidery and flower crown. When she says she used to wear them too, Kamille offers hers as a present. Surprised, she says she cannot take it since it’s hers. Adding on, she tells her it wouldn’t go with her outfit since Sahed always wants them to match their performances. Lying down beside Kamille, she invites her to watch their performance, to which she agrees.
Rainah then thanks Kamille for standing up for her and says she never thought a Kalgratti citizen would do that. At that, Kamille trembles and confesses she joined the circus to get close to them specifically. The other girl jolts up at with the proposal of being an assistant. She stops Kamille’s rambling and suggests she design matching outfits for herself and Sahed. Saying she’ll take her in as the costume designer accordingly, Rainah wishes her goodnight and goes off. Marionetta Chapter 16 ends with Kamille happy she finally made it.
