Gwichon Village Chapter 1: Meet Mumyeong Heo

The opening of Gwichon Village Chapter 1 presents a scenario where a man meticulously cleans a house before unveiling two bloodied and bound individuals in the bathroom while calmly mentioning his intention to “cleanse” them next. This unsettling scene captivates readers and sets the tone for the mystery that unfolds. 

The story moves ahead 11 hours to a police inquiry overseen by an officer. What puzzles the authorities is that the entire house had been thoroughly cleaned by the perpetrator. The officer connects this incident to two murders in Chuhol and Shinpyeong, speculating that the meticulous cleaning is what ties them together rather than the method of murder. The police inquiry moves forward as the cop instructs to check the surveillance videos while the perpetrator drives serenely and tunes into news updates regarding the law enforcement probe. He gets rid of any incriminating evidence by ditching his car. 

The narrative then moves on to Gwichon – a village where the murderer shows up and confronts a hostile man head-on. His daughter steps in and starts questioning the killer’s credibility upon hearing about his supposed link to a villager named Jeongja Kim. Their uneasy conversation unveils the fact that Jeongja Kim passed away three years ago – casting doubts on the killer’s assertions. 

The Gwichon Village Chapter 1 concludes with the murderer/grandson of Jeongja Kim, stepping into her home with caution and suspicion in search of any potential occupants residing in the house, creating a sense of anticipation among the readers for what unfolds next.

The Gwichon Village Chapter 2 opens with the Chief and his companions demanding entry at the newcomer’s door. Despite the tension in the air, he stays composed and nonchalantly mentions that he leapt over the wall to get inside. Upon discovering that the new arrival was Jeongja’s grandson, the chief’s attitude changed subtly. However, when the grandson inquired about the neat condition of the house despite his family’s absence, the chief explained that villagers had taken care of it to comfort Jeongja’s soul. 

When a villager named Hyeonseop asks the chief why he allowed the newcomer to stay in the village, the chief turns around and points towards the roof. They both witness a dark shadow-like figure joyfully dancing on the rooftop. The tension escalates, and an eerie atmosphere envelops them all. 

The Gwichon Village Chapter 2 ends with the girl from before facing the newcomer and cautioning him about his decision to stay put. Later, she gives him pillows and a blanket since he didn’t bring anything other than a backpack. This chapter leaves readers hanging as he tears open a pillow to uncover an item inside.

The Gwichon Village Mystery Chapter 3: Seongsik’s Chicken

Gwichon Village Chapter 3 begins with Hyeonseop trying to steal a chicken, which sparks a confrontation with Seongsik. Hyeonseop argues that the village chief requires chicken. When the chief shows up to handle the issue and suggests paying for the chicken (even though Seongsik refuses), it becomes obvious that the leader has power over the villagers. 

As the newcomer sees all this, he thinks back on the developments in the village since his stay there. He ponders over it all in silence before being unexpectedly approached by the girl who sheds light on the transformation that occurred following her and her father’s arrival in the village.

The conversation between the two adds to the intrigue when the girl offers to help him adjust to life in the village, but his suspicion flares up. He confronts her that she had hidden something in his pillow, showing her the object in hand. The girl explains that it is a protective charm to keep the ghosts away, introducing a supernatural element, a twist that complicates the already strange village dynamics.

Gwichon Village Chapter 3 concludes with Seongsik still being upset with Hyeonseop and callously taking the life of one of his chickens. His anger grows as he schemes for payback, kindling more curiosity among the readers about the next chapter. 

Gwichon Village Chapter 4: Seongsik Vs. Hyeonseop 

The Gwichon Village Chapter 4 begins with Seongsik and Hyeonseop confronting each other. Seongsik appears disoriented and brandishes a knife. While Hyeonseop cautions Seongsik to be wary of the chief and the “mother,” he still makes an ineffective move against him.

The next day, the newcomer exits his home and again encounters that girl. She notifies him about a community gathering focused on him. She guides him to the meeting place with a sense of haste and intrigue that adds to the mystery surrounding his involvement. 

During the gathering, everyone was present, including the chief and the villagers alike. The newcomer was unexpectedly called out by the chief to partake in patrol duties alongside Hyeonseop and Seokho. However, he declined this offer, causing a stir among the villagers. The chief’s cryptic remark, “The mother will put the arrogant fool to good use,” hinted at a power dynamic within the village that raised eyebrows and fueled speculation among onlookers.

The girl later asks the newcomer about his name and learns that his name is  Mumyeong Heo. She then cautions Heo to follow the council’s directives. Nevertheless, he refuses to assist the village, paying no mind to the girl’s anxieties as a feeling of peril remains in the air. The Gwichon Village Chapter 4 concludes with the chief conducting an offering ceremony, which implies that the village possesses abilities beyond influence and alludes to a mystical or sect-like sway. 

Gwichon Village Chapter 5: Flashback of Mumyeong

The Gwichon Village Chapter 5 unveils a heart-wrenching incident from Mumyeong’s childhood when his parents tragically lost their lives in a car accident. The unsettling revelation comes when it is disclosed that their deaths were not accidents but deliberate homicides. 

The focus then moves to Seongsik as we see his growing sense of paranoia and illogical behaviour becoming evident. Despite his wife’s reassurance that Hyeonseop had helped him out of trouble, Seongsik remains fixated on blaming him for the chicken theft incident. His anger reaches a boiling point when Ga-Eun, the girl who is helping Mumyeong, approaches with some peaches which she was taking for Mumyeong. Seongsik grabs a knife from the basket in a moment of fury and confusion. 

The Gwichon Village Chapter 5 comes to a gripping conclusion as Ga-eun rushes to Heo’s home with Seongsik on her heels while she is bleeding and filled with fear. His insanity reaches its peak when he menacingly utters the words “Be reborn in paradise” before making another attempt to harm her. The chapter concludes with a twist that leaves readers on the edge of their seats, wondering if Ga-eun will manage to evade danger and if Seongsik’s madness will be controlled. 

Personal Reflection 

The Gwichon Village Mystery unfolds at a good pace without losing its allure and effectively builds suspense naturally throughout the narrative journey. The illustrations are exquisitely crafted, vividly capturing the essence of the village in a manner that enhances the ambience of the thriller. The characters in this webtoon really stand out. They are fascinating, with their actions and secretive insights that bring a layer of suspense to the plot.
