At this point, Marci—Marco’s sister and a bit of a troublemaker—finally asks the big news. Eli is asked by Marci if she has a boyfriend. Eli turns red completely and agrees. Marco quickly feels both surprised and heartbroken. Marci says with a pout that, if Eli didn’t have a boyfriend, they could have been sisters. They both joke about it, but Marci says Eli won’t really get to be her sister unless she dates Marco. Awkward silence and double blushing happen just as Marco’s parents come in. The Dickheads Chapter 23 ends with a room full of red faces and unspoken feelings swirling in the air.

She quickly points out it’s only the screen protector and politely apologizes for everything that happened. She encourages her grandma to put her faith in her and proposes meeting Levi. Even though she’s not sure what to do, Grandma listens—something is starting to change. The Dickheads Chapter 25 ends with bridges being built, one cautious step—and one cracked screen—at a time.
Chapter 26: Old Flames, New Burns

Amy gets a smirk from him, who says he is “hard to bring under control.” Amy, as always, doesn’t hold back and replies by accusing him of being a drug addict. He smiles, leaves, and tells her plainly: she can’t control Levi. The Dickheads Chapter 26 ends with Amy realizing that love—especially Levi’s—isn’t something she can leash, no matter how hard she tries.
The Dickheads Chapter 27: Hurting Egos
The Dickheads Chapter 27 begins with Eli and Marco enjoying a lighthearted moment, bonding over his drawings. They’re enjoying themselves, joking around and looking happy, but Levi is watching sadly from a distance. He leaves with a sad smile.

Levi almost gets angry, making fists, but then he calms down and breathes out slowly.
Levi says he’s not angry about Eli’s actions but about the way Marco looks at her. He leaves with a hard shove, leaving Marco so quiet that the tension is so thick, one could use a butter knife to cut it. The Dickheads Chapter 27 ends with bruised pride, unsaid feelings, and a brooding storm brewing between two boys who care a little too much.
Chapter 28: The Old Wounds of History
The Dickheads Chapter 28 begins with Marco furiously glaring at his canvas, paintbrush frozen midair like it’s staging a protest. In any situation, Marco can’t stop his mind from going over Levi’s insistence that he should stay away from Eli. Marco explodes with anger—how can Levi take control over Marco’s relationships and who he is friends with? How can he act like he owns both everything and Eli? Marco is taken back by his past memories of little-himself crying when little Levi comforted him and said, “I’ll be with you.” Where did they go from helping to hurting one another?
Presently, Marco hurries home, tears almost spilling out, and slams the door when he enters his room. His mother stands there, shaking and crying out, her heart wrenched by the pain she sees in her son. Yet, Marco simply lies down on his bed, feeling too much, trying to hold himself in place with the remains of his heart.
At that moment, his phone starts beeping. It turns out to be Eli sending a message that she’s getting her car and asking if he would like to go grocery shopping together this afternoon. Marco looks at the text, feeling both a wish to see her and a sense of guilt inside him. He answers sadly that he can’t help. The Dickheads Chapter 28 ends with unresolved pain, a friendship fractured, and a boy trapped between what once was and what might never be again.
The Dickheads Chapter 29: Game Over, Dad’s Here
The Dickheads Chapter 29 begins with Levi gaming furiously with Nindo, his friend. But even virtual victories can’t shut down the guilt loop playing in his head. He asks Nindo if perhaps he was too critical of Marco the last time they met. Nindo shrugs, and Levi mumbles that he feels so bad because their first real conversation in ages ended so badly. He is so frustrated that he actually pulls out his hair. Shocked, Nindo takes his hands and tells him not to hurt himself, even if he is angry or upset.
He shares with Nindo that he is acing Spanish, the language he’s learning. Yet, before the feeling changes, his father begins to pound on the door. Levi says that he probably figured out he missed class. Nindo is surprised by what he sees. “You skipped? Knowing the way he is??” It looks like a horror movie is starting.
Dad enters, making Nindo run out of the house like a squirrel that’s scared. His father is furious, scolding him for getting poor grades, missing classes, and possibly ruining any chance of going to college. Levi tries to explain that he’s doing well in Spanish, but Dad isn’t listening. Levi cries, shouting at his father to leave him. His dad finally leaves, not before calling him useless.
Levi starts to cry and starts hyperventilating badly. He’s about to lose control when he hears Eli’s words: “Count to three.” The Dickheads Chapter 29 ends with Levi softly crying, trying to piece himself back together—one breath at a time.

Chapter 30: Cart Bumps and Complicated Hearts
The Dickheads Chapter 30 begins with Eli noticing Marco’s replies have gone from essays to post-it notes. Feeling the shift, she heads to the grocery store with a mission: plan a peace summit between Levi and Marco—and maybe squeeze Grandma into that social calendar too. But destiny (and a shopping cart) have other plans. Bam! She crashes into a stylish green-haired girl named Leif, who, plot twist, is also the vice president of their school’s student council. Eli, dazzled, thinks, “I wanna grow up to look that cool.”
Leif introduces her chill friend Olivia, and the trio ends up vibing like old pals over spilled drinks and deep girl talk. But just when the mood hits peak sparkle, Eli’s phone buzzes. Her smile dims. Leif picks up on it. Eli sadly reveals, “Boy drama…” Leif confesses she’s no stranger to that chaos either, and they end up bonding and talking over it.
The new friends say their goodbyes with promises to keep in touch—Leif giving Eli a subtle “we’re in this together” wink. Driving home, Eli reflects: before she mends the relationship between Levi and Marco, she has to patch things up with Grandma.
