Not So Silent is a queer romance webtoon based around the fictional Faraday high school- highlights the journey of two teenagers as they navigate peer pressure, parental expectations and academic burdens- and find each other in the process. The webtoon teaches self-acceptance, advocates for inclusivity, and speaks up against homophobia. Moreover, the cherry on top, it has the cutest illustrations! Previously in Not So Silent, Lewis’s mother unjustly grounds him for a month as a punishment for talking back to her (he was standing up for his sister). Facing increasingly terrible behaviour from his mother, Lewis begins to feel more loved by Fern’s family. He sneaks out of his room to attend Sofia’s quinceañera and does it without his mother’s suspicion… right? Let’s explore Not So Silent Chapter 48-51, the season 1 finale, to find out!
Not So Silent Chapter 48: Lewis Arrives at Sofia’s Quinceañera
Not So Silent Chapter 48 begins as Lewis enters the sparkling, heavily decorated party hall. He catches sight of Mrs. Montalvo and rushes to embrace her. She warmly greets him, squishes his cheeks, and gushes over how handsome he looks. Sofia appears beside her and groans, telling her to stop being embarrassing. Lewis looks in amazement at her, dressed in a glittering blue gown, a short blazer jacket, and a contemporary crown.
He hugs her and tells her that she looks like an actual princess. Sofia explains how they’d painstakingly gotten her dress custom-made, and her mother sighs and agrees behind them. Mrs. Motalvo turns to Lewis and thanks him for taking care of Fern (which isn’t easy!). Although Lewis brushes it off, saying that it was the least he could do, Mrs. Montalvo hugs him and calls him an angel. Sofia, once again, tells her not to embarrass her. Mrs. Motalvo slings her arms around both of them, saying, “I can’t help it. I’ve got so many kiddos here to be proud of.”
Lewis suddenly realizes Fern’s absence and questions where he is. Gritting her teeth, Sofia grumbles that he’d better be here soon. She realizes that her father is missing too and understands that they must be planning something. She calls them ‘party animals’ and is convinced they’ll ride into her party on camels. Not So Silent Chapter 48 concludes as Lewis decides that he needs to keep an eye out for him, while Fern walks in the shadows behind him.
Not So Silent Chapter 49: The Musical Montalvo Family
Not So Silent Chapter 49 begins as Lewis admires the party atmosphere and decorations. He speculates about Fern’s outfit and guesses that he’ll wear a fancy suit. He suspects that he’ll look like a prince, since he always does anyway.
Suddenly, the crowd begins clapping as Mrs. Montalvo announces the ‘princesa’ in Spanish. As Sofia walks forward, she further tells the crowd to clap and dance along with the music when it starts. She looks at her daughter and says into the microphone,’ This is for you, our princess.’
The music begins playing, and Mrs. Montalvo starts singing. Lewis immediately starts to admire her ‘gorgeous voice’. While she sings, Lewis sees Mr. Montalvo playing the guitar. Last but not least, Fern walks out wearing calavera makeup behind Sofia. Not So Silent Chapter 49 concludes as Lewis becomes heavenstruck with the way Fern looks.
Chapter 50: Fern and Lewis Finally Kiss!
Not So Silent Chapter 50 begins with Fern taking Sofia’s hand, and they dance, while Lewis remains transfixed on him. Two girls cheer his name, he winks at them, and they immediately gush over him. ‘Forget Cinderella’s prince… that man is butt ugly compared to Fern!’ Lewis thinks, as the two girls fight over who was winked at.
Sofia twirls over to Lewis and holds out her hand, inviting him to dance. He quickly denies the offer and tells her that he doesn’t dance. Sofia, playing the birthday card, gives him no choice but to learn how. She whisks him away to Fern.
Fern takes his hand and begins to lead him, just like the night of his house party. Catching on easily, Lewis starts to enjoy himself as he dances with the Montalvo family.
Later, Fern and Lewis sit on a bench together. Lewis calls Fern a liar for saying that parties aren’t his thing, and Fern clarifies that he’d been talking about house parties. They laugh, and Fern tells Lewis that he appears more confident. “I’ve been learning to become my own best advocate,” he says, calling it the ‘Fern effect’. He explains how he’s constantly inspired by him. Slowly, they lean in. Finally, after being constantly interrupted by curious deer and loud sneezes, they kiss, concluding Not So Silent Chapter 50.
Not So Silent Chapter 51: Season 1 Finale
Not So Silent Chapter 51 begins as Lewis pulls away, apologizing for kissing him. He awards himself the trophy for ‘moron of the year’, before Fern takes his hand and kisses him again. Then, Fern notices that his painted lips had left black smudges on Lewis’s face, and he taps his face to indicate to Lewis. When he realizes, they both start laughing. Sinking into the bliss of the evening, Lewis realizes that he’s still completely unsure about his future. ‘But I have new inspiration. And I can’t wait to see where it takes me,’ he thinks.
In the darkness of her room, Lewis’s mother sits with her phone illuminating her face. On the screen, a tracking app is open with a bright red dot indicating Lewis’s position, ominously concluding Not So Silent Chapter 51.
