Just a Cat Chapter 1: Hawk Meets Cat

Just A Cat Chapter 1 thrillingly begins with an epic shot of an injured black cat fleeing away from a giant, screeching dragon. The black cat, carrying a white kitten, bears the weighty responsibility of distancing the small cat from a mysterious ‘Master of the Tree’. With an electric buzz of bright red magic, the black cat speedily whizzes away from the dragon.
Entering a small cave, the father cat parks his frightened young son on the rocky floor and tells him to wait for him. Alone in the huge, empty cavern, the little cat miserably watches his father’s silhouette disappear into the daylight.
A day passes by, and the little cat wakes up to a grumbling stomach. As if on cue, he sees a line of red berries in front of him, leading out of the cave. Although slightly suspicious, he leans in to taste one. Suddenly, his father, swooping in out of nowhere, tackles him. He arrives just in time to save his son from the hungry mouth of a dragon. The black cat uses its magic to repeatedly stab the beast, finally ending its life.
He soars out of the cave with his son, but mid-air, the duo is ambushed by two more large dragons. Using all his magic, the black cat attacks both monsters at once. Unfortunately, there’s no time to rest. A third dragon appears behind the exhausted, vulnerable cat. Having no energy left, the black cat exposes himself to the wyvern’s talons.
The Hunter Comes to Help
Meanwhile, an armoured, Mandalorian-style hunter watches the battle in the sky. The man, surprised at the wyvern sighting, decides to follow it.
At the same time, the black cat crashes onto the ground. Bleeding heavily, he limps into the cave carrying his son. He tiredly curls up with a paw around his kitten, slowly losing blood. Another dragon pokes his head into the opening and peers at them. Abruptly, a metallic contraption (resembling a grappling hook, of sorts) shoots through the wyvern’s mouth and pulls it out of the cave.
The armoured hunter stands outside. Heroically unsheathing a sword, he kills the beast with one gleaming arc. Then, curious about the dragon’s prey, he pokes his head into the small hole- only to find himself pounced on by an angry little kitten. In a burst of deep green electricity, the kitten magically knocks the helmet off the warrior’s head, revealing a young man with dirty blonde hair and golden eyes. The man tries to make peace but the small kitten relentlessly attacks him nevertheless. However, before the fight becomes ugly, the injured black cat gets in between them.
The man watches the kitten try to protect the wounded cat from him and understands the situation. He offers to help, bandaging the black cat’s injuries- and although the treatment wouldn’t last long, the white kitten bows in gratitude. The hunter readjusts his helmet and begins to leave. However, he suddenly notices that- save for the head- the slain wyvern had astonishingly disappeared.
The Black Cat Dies
The white kitten climbs onto the hunter, trying to warn him, when both of them are hit by the wyvern. The same dragon from before towers above them with extended talons, but in place of its head is a luminescent tree. The bruised black cat, once again, heroically stands up to the dragon. To help, the hunter (whose mechanical gear had mysteriously broken) climbs onto the dragon and tries to rip the fluorescent tree out. Interestingly, the glowing blue essence of the vines- mana- is absorbed by the little white kitten. The kitten, using this new power, defeats the dragon in a big streak of radiant blue light.
The little cat rushes to his dying father, who begins to regret not trusting his son with more knowledge. He utters his last words, “You truly are a… great cat.” Heartbroken, the kitten tries to heal his father to no avail. The hunter pulls the grieving cat away and tells him that if he stayed alone, he’d get killed. He offers to take the kitten in and help him use his powers meaningfully.
As the sun dips below the horizon, illuminating the sky, an armoured hunter drags a dead wyvern away, with a little cat perched on his shoulder. The hunter reveals his name- Hawk- to his new companion and asks for the kitten’s name. Just A Cat Chapter 1 concludes as the nameless little kitten decides on just ‘Cat’.
Just A Cat Chapter 2: Hawk Confronts a Traitor

Just A Cat Chapter 2 begins in Freesia City as the pedestrians pinch their noses, making way for the decaying dragon that Hawk carries. A hooded figure recognizes him and mysteriously decides to change his ‘plans’.
At Kwonter’s butcher shop, Hawk walks in with the wyvern. Kwonter, part-time butcher and part-time informant, expresses his surprise at Hawk’s unexpected capture. Previously, he’d sent him on a mission to catch a traitor of the Topz Kingdom, Sirius, who was supposed to be in the woods. He hands over a picture and tells Hawk to find the defector. Then, taking two of the dragon’s talons, Hawk leaves the shop.
The next day, Cat wakes up in bed with Hawk’s empty armour. Sitting on a table, Hawk sits and tinkers with his metallic gadgets. He tells Cat that he never sleeps in his own bed, without much further explanation. Hawk shows the curious kitten his weapon golem. He describes the manacel (like a magical battery) he uses to store the mana (the essence that Cat absorbs) that powers it.
Cat Is a Magical Creature… Right?
Later, Hawk takes Cat to the Hunter’s Guild, an organization created to hunt and manage magical creatures. Membership with the guild ensured many facilities, including the right to freely cross borders between countries. Hawk, a registered member, attempts to use its services to identify whether Cat is a magical creature and brings him to meet a Guild worker.
While he waits for the identification process to finish, a rock sails through the office window- right at him. Peering through the shattered glass, Hawk sees Sirius, the Topaz Kingdom traitor, waiting for him on the neighbouring rooftop. He recalls his childhood days training to be a Death Knight. Sir Sirius had mentored him when he was an impulsive and impatient fighter.
Before Cat’s test can be completed, Hawk grabs him and sails out the window. As he leaves to confront Sirius, the Guild worker’s identification device beeps red, indicating that Cat isn’t magical (wait, what?).
On the rooftops, Hawk comes face-to-face with his old mentor. Before Sirius can explain the reason for his treachery, an arrow pierces his neck. Hawk whirls around to face an archer who misunderstands him as Sirius’s ally and prepares to kill him, concluding Chapter 2.
Just A Cat Chapter 3: Sirius’s Death

Just A Cat Chapter 3 begins with an explanation of the Death Knights- assassins who directly work under the King of the Topaz Kingdom but have no official existence.
After the archer shoots Sirius, he takes out a large candlestick. While watching Hawk clumsily fight the nimble girl, he lights a bright red flame and vanishes. In the middle of an intense fight, the archer, Lena, realizes Sirius’s disappearance. After busting out some amazing moves, Hawk defeats her, unaware of Sirius’s vanishing act until Lena points it out. As people gather on the streets below to watch the fight, Hawk decides to head somewhere else to talk.
In the butcher shop, Kwonter tries to break the palpable tension between Lena and Hawk. He tells the outraged assassins to give up (great way to calm the nerves), showing them the latest news- the fall of the Topaz Kingdom. Kwonter explains the glowing tree that had appeared in the palace, making it unhabitable. Cat, trembling, says that it was due to the Master of the Tree.
At that moment, someone knocks on the door. A tall young man stands outside and, flashing his badge, introduces himself as Lucas, a Guild investigator. He calls out to Hawk and gives him a bill to repair the window he’d broken. Lucas also asks him whether he’d like to receive ‘something he’d left behind’. He takes Hawk to the edge of the forest and removes the lid of a casket, revealing Sirius’s body. Hawk immediately attacks Lucas, concluding Just A Cat Chapter 3.
Just A Cat Chapter 4: Hawk Learns About the World Tree

Just A Cat Chapter 4 begins with a battle between Lucas, a magician, and Hawk. Although Lucas tries to reason with the hot-headed hunter, Hawk seems to have the open-mindedness of a raging bull. He sets Cat down, telling him not to interfere with magic, and traps him with his helmet. After a fierce fight, Lucas overpowers Hawk. Worried, Cat jumps out of the helmet and sprints towards him, hoping to arrive before Lucas’s bright red magic does.
In time, Cat absorbs the red mana and successfully protects Hawk. The two men face each other again and lunge with their weapons drawn. Mid-air, two giant magical hands drive them apart and pin them down. Cat, wielding his reinforced power, persuades Hawk to listen to Lucas.
Hawk Decides to Save the World
Lucas explains that the luminescent World Tree is a parasitic creature that grants magic to ordinary beings but takes over their consciousness. The Topaz Kingdom had attempted to make a weapon using the tree and had conducted various experiments on various knights, creatures, and monsters. Sirius, a wizard, hadn’t lost his senses and had escaped as the only survivor. Lucas gives Hawk pictures of the experiments as evidence and has brought Sirius’s body for additional proof. He explains that Sirius had ended his own life before he lost consciousness, and had sent Lucas to brief Hawk. He’d originally planned to die by Hawk’s hands so that his old student wouldn’t be accused of betrayal.
Angry with the revelation that Sirius had died for him, Hawk decides to kill the Master of the Tree. Deluded with his own rage, he starts thinking of revenge as a logical course of action. Lucas reaches the conclusion that King Topaz is the Master of the Tree. He informs Hawk that he isn’t powerful enough to kill the King- he hadn’t even been able to defeat Lucas himself. Hawk simply holds out Cat and declares, “It’s possible if I have him.” He tells Cat that they’ll save the world, concluding Just A Cat Chapter 4.
Just A Cat Chapter 5: Master of the Tree

Just A Cat Chapter 5 begins as Lucas dubiously looks at Hawk. Lucas believes that the armoured assassin’s newfound quixotism is just an excuse for vengeance, but knows better than to stop him. Before he can leave, Hawk asks him about Cat, inquiring what Sirius knew about him.
Lucas points to a picture of the white kitten being experimented on. He explains that Cat hadn’t become host to the tree- there’s no sign of infection anywhere- and that he’d instead become weaponized by the Topaz Kingdom. Then, leaving the body with Hawk, he walks away.
Kneeling beside the black casket, Hawk decides against sharing the new information with Lena and Kwonter. He decides to complete his mission, clear his name, and go after the King. Interrupting his thoughts, Cat tells Hawk that he’d begun to think of him as family (aw). He asks him what he considers the most important in life, saying that he wants to help him. Hawk begins to panic, having never thought so deeply before, and tries to search for the right answer to keep Cat by his side (he’s a wee bit dense). He answers that his Death Knights are important to him, and then wonders if he should’ve said that he wants to save the world instead.
Meanwhile, at Kwonter’s shop, Hawk’s golem arrives with a message. A gloved hand reaches out to take the note, which details Hawk’s departure to fulfill his mission. However, the hand belongs to neither Kwonter nor Lena, for both of them had been tied up (using the same blue mana as the World Tree) by a masked foe. “Oh well, I hope to see you next time, Hawk,” says the masked person, concluding Just A Cat Chapter 5.
Just A Cat Chapter 6: Goblin Attack

Just A Cat Chapter 6 begins as Hawk senses the presence of another being, while on his journey to his headquarters. He draws his weapons just in time to encounter tree-reinforced goblins (really, they look like cute velociraptors). He distracts the creatures using his golem, and then tells Cat not to use his magic. Wanting to test his own strength, Hawk jumps into action, lunging and slashing at the creatures. However, defeating the reinforced creatures proves harder than expected. He strikes at the last one with his sword (which, for some reason, he holds upside down), and it shatters into pieces. Nevertheless, Hawk has a backup plan and unsheaths two new daggers, which finish the job.
“Wyvern blade,” he explains to Cat, the reason he previously took two talons from Kwonter. Suddenly, the beheaded goblin starts to resurrect with its tree-head replacement, concluding Just A Cat Chapter 6.
Just A Cat Chapter 7: Mount Cat

Just A Cat Chapter 7 begins as Hawk slashes at the regenerated goblin, wondering if parasitic monsters who could wield magic should be classified as magical creatures. When the goblin lunges again and again, Cat panics and lets loose a powerful beam of green mana. The goblin dies, and Hawk’s magical golem dries up and falls to the ground. In a wild moment, Hawk dashes to Sirius’s casket, which was directly in the line of Cat’s fire. However, the black box bears no trace of damage at all.
Later, Cat feels terrible for not following orders and fears harsh words from Hawk, who thanks him for saving his life instead. However, he sets a rule that Cat couldn’t use his magic without his permission, because Hawk would leave him if he did (how evil of him). In retaliation, Cat forms his own rule. He tells Hawk that, moving forward, they’d have to perform every activity- from sleeping to fighting- together. Hawk accepts the terms. He opens Sirius’s coffin, wondering why the magic hadn’t affected it, and asks Cat for a favour.
Later, a a military camp, a soldier dashes to the commander’s tent and urgently calls him out. A giant white kitten looms over the forest and mountains, causing the commander to wonder if it is a World Tree mutation. He turns to the man behind him, Lucas, for his opinion, ending Just A Cat Chapter 7.
