Love Bites Chapter 22: A Taste of Power
Love Bites Chapter 22 starts with the aftermath of the football game, which is still hanging in the air when Mason and Kieran find themselves alone, emotions still simmering. Mason tries to take control and confidently says that Kieran’s power will not affect him, as he is an alpha. But in the next breath, his confidence shatters, and he freezes. He is unable to move; his smug expression slips as fear creeps into his eyes.
Kieran comes dangerously close, with a smirk playing on his lips. “You’re no alpha, Mason Kane,” he says, voice low and cold. The vampire is torn between power and temptation, and tells Mason he has never tasted werewolf blood before. With threat and hunger in his voice, he says he has heard it is delicious.
In terror, Mason begs him to stop, trembling in place, backed into a corner. But now Kieran is on fire, his instincts are rising. “You will be my first,” he mutters and leans forward slowly, fangs inches away from the werewolf’s throat. And then Mason does something unexpected. He asks in a very low, shaking voice, “Please… bite me.” That one sentence knocks the wind out of Kieran. He startles, seeing how he almost did something that he can never undo. Mason comes closer, “Why didn’t you do it?”
The vampire replies that he does not want to hurt Mason. Hurting Mason will hurt Cella, which he does not want to happen at all. Mason freezes for a moment, eyes flickering with something unspoken. “When I should be thinking of Cella, I think of you, Kieran.”
A Glimpse of Desire
Mason leans in and asks Kieran whether he wants to kiss him again. He is unsure, helpless, torn between fear and desire. But the werewolf does not wait- he kisses him anyway. And in that kiss, the black-haired one experiences something innocent and all-consuming. A feeling that causes the rest of his world to fade. He likes it so much…It is as though, in that moment, everything is alright. That he might even think that Mason is not afraid, is not angry. However, the moment does not last.
Kieran sees something off about Mason; he is still under the influence of charmspeak. Guilt crashes over him in an instant. What if none of this is real? What if Mason’s feelings, his words, the kiss–they were all influenced by his powers?
Being unable to live with that uncertainty, the vampire pushes Mason off and runs away, his heart beating like anything. Later that night, lying in bed sadly, Kieran cannot get the kiss, the conversation, or the fear that he may have manipulated Mason unintentionally out of his mind. He tells himself that Mason must still be charmed. Otherwise, it is too painful to even think about: that Mason had meant it all.
At that moment, Kieran’s bedroom door creaks open. He sits up, startled, heart pounding again. A woman enters his room, stepping out of the shadows. And just like that, Love Bites Chapter 22 ends as a new chapter begins. One that would blow everything Keiran had believed to be true.
