Love Bites Chapter 18: Mason’s Alpha Complex
Love Bites Chapter 18 begins with Kieran still fuming from the bathroom escape during the double date gone wrong. Mason discovers him sulking in front of the mirror and carelessly tells him that he must stop being so dramatic and go back to the table. Maria believes that she did something wrong. Kieran is more frustrated, and after turning around, he raises the question that has been scratching him: “Why are you like this?” He blames Mason for forcing him into a false date, pretending, and lying all the time.
Mason snaps that Kieran is no better; he is also a liar. Kieran loses it and puts everything on the table. He says that Mason uses people as toys and never means what he says. Mason, evidently wounded, confesses in a low voice: “I can’t stop. It’s just who…what I am.” Then the truth comes rolling out. Mason is the heir of his mother, the future alpha of the Kane Pack, and has a condition that is called the Alpha Complex.
It is not only a leadership quality. It is a cursed mutation that affects a small number of alphas. Making them want to control others, dominate relations, and manipulate emotions. According to Mason, it has already ruined some parts of him. It began several years back. He had grown hot-tempered, volatile, sadistic, and cruel in ways that felt foreign. Like a stranger had taken over. He claims that now he attempts to divert it. To sarcasm, manipulation, and passive games, the alternative is much worse. Beneath the Growl
Kieran was ready to go after Mason again– but this? He was not ready to see vulnerability. So, in place of attacking, Kieran, in a low tone, asks, “Your what?” Mason is unable to respond. He is too frightened to know what it implies, and he flees.
Later, in the night, Kieran is lying in bed with his eyes open. His mind feels like a whirlpool of emotions. Mason looked so lost. So broken. And there was something about that which… struck a little too close. So, out of instinct, Kieran calls him. Mason answers.
The two are talking-discretely, embarrassedly, yet truthfully. Mason gives further details on the Alpha Complex. How it sometimes feels like his mind’s not his own, how his anger used to scare him, and how isolating the condition has been. Kieran listens and tells Mason what he needs to know most: “You are not alone.” He does not make a promise to fix it, but he promises to be there. Something Mason has not had for a long time.
After the end of the call, Kieran does not think about kissing Mason or fighting him. But only about holding him. Comforting him. He understands the pain that Mason experiences. It is strangely familiar: lonely, deep, and haunting. He recalls his childhood trauma. The fear that never completely disappeared. He wonders what she would have said. Could Laura Callisto have anticipated this?
Now, more than ever, Kieran is sure of one thing: that Mason should not be left alone, as it will only make the situation worse. Love Bites Chapter 18 ends with Kieran finally understanding that behind Mason’s growls is a boy just trying not to break.

What Happened So Far?
What begins as a tussle between two supernatural foes, Kieran and Mason, turns out to be much more complex. The two fight, quarrel, and even kiss, not once. However, as they explore the forbidden attraction, they also have to deal with the disappearance of a classmate and centuries-old hate between vampires and werewolves.
The emotional stakes are further piled by Cella, the childhood best friend of Kieran, when Mason starts dating her. Things get out of control as Keiran is torn between his desire to protect Cella and his mixed attraction to Mason. In the meantime, the political tension between the packs also rises. Secrets are revealed. Kieran has a brother, Cedric, who is more aggressive in his opinion as he struggles with his identity, guilt, and desire.
Now, with group assignments, double dates, envious glances, and supernatural drama taking place at a rapid pace, Kieran can no longer fake it. Things get more and more complicated by his date with a kind cheerleader, Maria. He cannot stop thinking of Mason even when Mason enters the bathroom, demanding to know why he is hiding here.
