The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 1: Unexpected Opportunity

Ellesion and Rayne
Ellesion and Rayne

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 1 begins as Ellesion, a ninth-class archmage, finally taps the last nail of his self-constructed restaurant into place. With an emotional feeling of fulfillment, he flashes back to fifteen years ago, when it all first started.

He’d been a young high school student aspiring to one day put on the chef’s hat and possibly have his own restaurant. However, walking back from his culinary program with baking on his mind, he’d suddenly been knocked out on the road. After dying in the accident, he’d woken up in a completely different realm- full of dragons, monsters, magic, and war and quickly accepted his reality. Optimistically, he’d noted that he wouldn’t have completed his mandatory military service back home. But by some terrible luck, at that exact moment, a knight announced the mandatory conscription of every eligible man in Luverne to fight in the war against dragons. Miserably, he’d let himself join the army.

During training, he’d been forced to eat terrible food that the others considered acceptable. That had been his lightbulb moment. He’d realized that if he opened a restaurant here, with all his polished culinary skills, it’d be a whopping success. However, the military service that was supposed to last two years lasted a tremendous fifteen years instead.

El’s Meat Supplier

In the present, a kind woman named Rayne worriedly checks on the man crying his eyes out beside her. Noticing her, Ellesion brushes the tears of joy away, introduces himself as ‘El’ and explains that he’d opened his first restaurant. Rayne joyfully greets the newcomer. She offers to supply meat from her husband’s butcher shop. When El decides to visit the shop, she warns him to be wary of her ill-tempered husband.

At the shop, Rayne’s intimidating husband immediately turns hostile at the sight of the aspiring chef. He rudely denies supplying El with meat. However, after persuasion from Rayne (she hits him on the head with a pan), he agrees to give him a chance. Since he’d been previously betrayed by a mercenary-turned-restraunteer before, he doesn’t give him the meat of his choosing. He decides to test El’s culinary aptitude before officially becoming his supplier. El opens the bag of meat and stares inside with horror, concluding The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 1.

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 2: El Cooks Pork to Perfection

Ellesion and Knoll (The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 1-6)

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 2 begins as Rayne strikes her husband with a pan again, to stop his incessant mocking of El. The brawny collapses onto the kitchen counter, but Rayne assures El that he’ll be fine. Although she offers to give him the ‘veloren meat’ (meat of wolves) he wanted, El walks away with his ‘uba belly meat’ (pork belly) instead. To Rayne’s surprise, he decides to keep his promise to the butcher and cheerfully invites them to eat his food in the evening.

Back in his kitchen, El muses over the dietary differences between his old and new worlds. In his current reality, pork was cheap and insignificant. El summons fire with his hands and starts grilling the pork belly.

In the evening, Rayne walks with her irritable husband. She reprimands him for being harsh on El, who seemed ‘honest and nice’, and asserts her superior judgment of people. He doesn’t listen to reason and retains his grumpy attitude, much to her annoyance.

A Ham-azing Business Deal

The ‘thermal blade’ technique he’d once used to obliterate horrifying monsters on the battlefield and save dozens of helpless soldiers, El now uses to perfectly cook his meat. The restaurant bell dings, signalling Rayne and her husband’s arrival. Rayne compliments the interiors and sweetly persuades her husband to drop his prickly perspective (possibly threatening him with a pan). El sears his pork with expertise and quickly chops up a salad to balance the umami meat. Beautifully plating it up, he adds the finishing touches and presents it to the couple.

Rayne raises the fork to her mouth- and is immediately transported to piggy heaven. The meat melts in her mouth, and the greens cut through the grease. She showers El with praise for his dish. They turn to her husband, Knoll, who glowers at El. With an empty plate and drool hanging from his lips, he bangs the table and demands MORE! Rayne thwacks him with her handy pan and asks him to request politely. Knoll regains his composure (pan-thwacking proves effective once again) and officially decides to sponsor El’s restaurant. Meanwhile, in her bed, El’s comrade wakes up to the smell of his pork, concluding The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 2.

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 3: Lurine the Black Dragon

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 3 begins a week later as El wraps up another successful day at the restaurant. After all the customers praise his delicious meals, as per usual, El heads back to his kitchen. He notices the empty bottles in his spice rack. Since spices were extremely valuable in Luverne, El had begun using an interworldly summoning spell to procure the cheap day-to-day ingredients from his previous world. He’d created the spell trying to reach back home, however, the magic hadn’t been strong enough. As a result, he’d adapted a spell to, essentially, do some fancy shopping. Although the magic limited him to only preserved foods (fresh food spoiled upon arrival), he’d made good use of it.

After performing the spell, El becomes immensely exhausted. He opens his fridge in anticipation of a cold beer to counter his energy drain, but finds it empty. “Lurine!” he yells in rage, while his partner sleeps in bed with empty beer cans strewn across the blanket. He confronts his lazy compadre in anger, but she dismisses his accusations. Lurine, a black dragon in human form, arrogantly asserts that cleaning up after herself was beneath majestic creatures like her. Nevertheless, El has her peeling onions as a punishment in no time. He’d found Lurine orphaned and homeless during the war and had taken her in.

Down a Rabbit Knoll

Knoll stumbles in and requests alcohol and food. Having no beer left in stock (thanks to a certain immature centuries-old dragon), El presents him with soju (a Korean drink) instead. Knoll praises his masterful combination of meat and soju. El hurries off to get him another bottle, noting his troubled mood. Knoll desperately wants to get drunk and confesses that he believed Rayne was cheating on him. He tells El that he’d seen his wife dress up and leave with the excuse of “running errands” frequently, for months. He’d finally gotten suspicious and tailed her. It turns out, she’d been meeting with his mercenary best friend (oh, the betrayal). El seems dubious. He tells the heartbroken man to calm down and that he’ll handle it.

With Lurine by his side, he roams among the city rooftops until he finds Rayne in a crowded restaurant. El notices the blonde man sitting across from her, concluding The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 3.

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 4: Spilling the (Beautifully Cooked) Beans

Ment and Lurine (The Archmage's Restaurant Chapter 1-6)
Ment and Lurine (The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 1-6)

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 4 begins as El, promising to give her two steaks, asks Lurine to eavesdrop on Rayne and the blonde man’s conversation. She hears them planning to tell Knoll about their meetings, and El concludes that it isn’t an affair. He approaches their table, surprising Rayne, to tell them about her husband’s suspicions.

Later, Rayne and the man, Ment, walk into El’s restaurant. In fury, Knoll immediately makes a fist to punch him. However, his fist meets an impenetrable blue shield covering Ment’s body. El strides inside with a basket of vegetables and breezily asks his guests to sort things out with civility. Dropping the bombshell that Ment had secretly loaned them money to start up their butcher shop, El goes into the kitchen to prepare shabu-shabu (a Korean dish) with special mushrooms from Luverne.

Two Peas in a Pod

Rayne explains that she’d been repaying Ment in small installments. He’d spent a major chunk of his life savings to support them and kept his distance to avoid discovery. As the conversation begins heating up, El sets his dish down in front of them. After tasting the broth and vegetables, the anger of both men dissolves into a wide smile. Ment nostalgically remembers serving with Knoll in the war. Back then, Knoll had taken a hit for Ment- who’d hunted down Veloren to make a similar makeshift broth. Swept away by the comfort of good memories, the two men repair their friendship by apologizing to one another.

Later, Lurine confronts El about the two steaks she’d been promised. “A dragon always values a promise! It seems that’s not the case for you!” she yells angrily. El begins to assure her that he would stick to his words when Ment asks him whether he’s up for hosting a big dinner feast for the mercenaries, concluding The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 4.

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 5: A Hearty Meal

Miltein and Medidana
Miltein and Medidana

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 5 begins as El struggles to catch a palenque (a type of agile chicken that’s extremely valuable due to its elusive nature). Frustration turns him briefly irrational as he hilariously contemplates burning the entire forest down to catch it. He’d decided to cook palenque for the mercenary feast- but Knoll didn’t supply it. On a tip from him about sightings, he’d ventured into the forest.

After proving unsuccessful at catching the ninja chicken, he defeatedly turns to Lurine. She lets out a burst of terrifying purple energy and easily catches it. “Now, could you do fifteen more?” El asks. Later, Lurine sits in El’s kitchen, drinking a beer after her ‘day of hard work’ (according to El, all she’d done was ‘glare at them’).

That evening, El’s quaint restaurant is alive with the gruff laughter of mercenaries. The other men doubtfully ask Ment about the food, but junior mercenary Miltein expresses complete faith in her favourite superior’s choices. Sure enough, when El serves his fried palenque, all the mercenaries are reduced to blubbering messes. He enlists Lurine’s help to serve the packed crowd (only after persuading the arrogant dragon by bringing up their decision to run a restaurant together during the war).

Medidana’s Surprise Visit

After another successful night, Lurine tiredly plops down into a chair. Not only had she served all the mercenaries, she’d cleaned up after too. El jokes that she’d finally grown up, and she affectionately puts her head on his shoulder, saying, “Well, it’s for the restaurant. Our restaurant.”

Just then, the door creaks open and Medidana, a sinister-looking old woman, strides in. El immediately stiffens up at the sight of him. He asks the Black Dragon elder whether he’d come for Lurine, even though she had the complete right to stay with him. Lurine, hiding behind El, meekly says that she wouldn’t go with him, not after they’d abandoned her.

Medidana reassures her that they hadn’t abandoned her yet, and because her eight hundredth birthday was next year, she’d be recognized as an adult by the clan. According to their rules, if she didn’t have her own lair by then, she’d be obligated to reside in their holy land. If they defied these rules, war would be waged. Casually, El says that he’ll ‘just do it then’ because it isn’t ‘that big of a deal’, concluding The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 5.

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 6: A Pleasure Doing Business

Dieran Greyk, Ellesion and Lurine (The Archmage's Restaurant Chapter 1-6)
Dieran Greyk, Ellesion and Lurine (The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 1-6)

The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 6 begins as Medidana rages in anger at El’s decision to wage war. Lurine tells El not to escalate matters over a simple issue. While Medidana shouts about his arrogance, El interrupts both of them, saying that he simply meant to make a dragon lair. Mid-meltdown, Medidana pauses and deliberates on the misunderstanding. El explains his idea to fashion Lurine a dragon cave, and the Dragon elder has no choice but to accept the terms.

However, with his increasingly crowded restaurant in the mix, El had bitten off more than he could chew. Building a dragon lair required a tremendous amount of time and resources- things he didn’t have. Panicked with the pressure, El decides that he needs a way to reduce his customers. He decides to supply his own meat supplier, Knoll, with palenque meat, making his butcher shop the only one that sells palenque in the empire. All his customers would get redirected to Knoll’s instead. El decides to split the profits, although Knoll isn’t happy, and creates a huge magic shield over the forest to catch the elusive chickens. He shocks Knoll with his monstrous ability, but requests that he keep it a secret.

Soon enough, El’s restaurant becomes completely empty. Although an average businessman would be bawling his eyes out, El claps his hands with glee. Now he can divert his attention to building Lurine’s lair. He picks out the hill under his restaurant to create the cave, and leaves Lurine to start digging the entrance. He returns to watch over the restaurant and enjoys the peace and quiet. Sadly, it doesn’t last long because a blonde-haired boy walks in. He desperately asks for food and agrees to wait for the plate. El notices that the well-dressed boy seemed of noble blood, but doesn’t question further. With his usual culinary expertise, El puts together a delicious hamburger for the hungry boy.

Before he can taste the burger, another man barges in. He yells at the young boy for eating in a place where he might contract food poisoning, which offends El. The man tells El that he was in the presence of Lord Greyk’s son, Dieran. However, El explains that he treats all his customers equally. The man mistakes his integrity for arrogance and hurriedly rushes the dejected noble boy out of the restaurant.

Lurine bursts through the door, complaining of her aching hands. El notices the gold coin Dieran had left behind and tells her to put a hold on digging for the day. Since the poor boy had paid, El left himself no choice but to teleport to his palace. Sitting alone in his luxury bedroom, Dieran stares down at the floor. Suddenly, a giant blue portal appears behind him, and El steps out with his burger. Before he can eat, someone hurries to the door- interrupting his meal for the second time (oh, for goodness’ sake!), concluding The Archmage’s Restaurant Chapter 6.
