Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 11: Li Yun’s Decision
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 11 begins as Li Yun watches Bailin, who adorably pretends to read his old research papers, and ponders his duty as a scientist. Knowing that the mythical white-scaled merman in front of him is an undiscovered species, Li Yun battles the decision of reporting his finding.
With a notebook and pencil, Li Yun breaks down the situation: Bailin’s mermaid-kind may be a threatened species, and if so, research could help them survive. However, their habitat was remote enough to keep them secluded from danger. While on one hand, taking a DNA sample of Bailin would be the responsible thing to do, Li Yun starts imagining the consequences of publicising the discovery. He imagines a meeting room, filled with obnoxious money-hungry men in suits, who pay no regard to the involved scientists and their opinions- AKA him. They’d immediately capitalize on the idea of this beautiful, legendary species and capture the mermaids for further “research”.
However, the capitalist idea of research would be to plop Bailin into a clear-glass aquarium filled with dozens of people, raising their cameras and snapping selfies of the cool merman, while Li Yun watches helplessly in horror. Instantly, Li Yun rules out the idea of making his discovery public. Even so, he decides to document his interactions with Bailin and take photos (for research, duh), concluding Chapter 11.
Chapter 12: Pile of Fish
Li Yun grills fish on his electric stove, starting Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 12. He tiredly looks at the large pile of raw fish beside him and sighs. A small tear escapes his eye as he recollects the event.
Li Yun had become frustrated with Bailin for accidentally trashing his camp. The guilty merman had jumped into the ocean, leading Li Yun to believe that he’d scared his fish friend away. Suddenly, Bailin had re-emerged with an enormous pile of fish, placed on the ice for Li Yun as an endearing apology.
After that, Bailin had disappeared (not really, he’s hiding behind Li Yun’s tent). He watches as Li Yun gets up to take care of the fish pile, concluding Chapter 12.
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 13: Grilled Merman
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 13 begins as Bailin picks up the first few fish from the giant pile. Suddenly, he hears a loud commotion behind him. When he turns to look, he sees his electric stove and cooked fish on the ground. And who should lie in the middle of the mess but Bailin, with a burn mark on his fin.
Shocked and exasperated at the same time, Li Yun rushes to the injured merman’s side with his first-aid kit. As he begins to tend to him, Bailin grabs both his wrists with his white webbed fingers. Confused, Li Yun apologizes for his unknown mistake when Bailin suddenly flops onto him, concluding Chapter 13.
Chapter 14: Snow Army
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 14 begins as Bailin, lying on his belly, scoops some snow into a ball. Li Yun stares on in puzzlement, wondering what the troublesome merman was up to.
However, Bailin (a skilled sculptor, apparently) presents Li Yun with an adorable mini snow-sculpture of himself. Shocked by the statuette, Li Yun praises the beautiful work and causes the Arctic Michelangelo to blush fiercely.
The next day, Li Yun goes about his habitual morning routine. He yawns, stretches, and walks outside while brushing his teeth. However, his view is not the usual barren, white scenery. In fact, the landscape is joined by a new, surprising development that makes the scientist spit out his toothpaste.
Behold, Bailin’s snow army!
Tens of snow sculptures lay sprawled on the snow before him, each one of Li Yun. Bailin lies exhausted in the middle of the display, snoring, which concludes Chapter 14.
Chapter 15: Li Yun the Sculptor…?
Li Yun examines his snow figures, starting Chapter 15. He admires a cute, cartoonish version of him before chancing upon an extremely realistic bust. Blushing, he wonders if he really looks ‘this handsome’. He notices a shy, embarassed Bailin watching him go through the figurines.
Li Yun confidently assumes that he wants to exchange snowmen and makes a small statue for the confused merman (he just wanted praise). He presents a shabbily made creature (that sort of resembles a seal) to Bailin. Holding the seal-creature in his hand, Bailin remains silent for a moment and then bursts out laughing at it. This time, Li Yun correctly understands the merman, concluding Chapter 15.
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 16: Jealous of Snowself
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 16 begins as Li Yun asks Bailin to make a statue of himself. Within minutes, Bailin has created a life-size snow replica that could function as his mirror image. Li Yun applauds the skilled merman for his incredible talent. Touching snow-Bailin’s cheek, he analyses the fine work. Li Yun, tapping into his scientific mind, uncovers similar humanoid features and begins to ponder the evolution of the species.
Meanwhile, Bailin watches Li Yun and his snow clone and starts feeling envious of his frosty counterpart. Like an adorable puppy, he knocks it out of the way and eagerly assumes its place, concluding Chapter 16.
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 17: Magic Rectangle
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 17 begins as Bailin cherishes his little seal figure that Li Yun created for him. Li Yun smiles at him and thinks in a daze, ‘This entire situation… is so odd.’ He decides to snap a picture of Bailin with his creations to preserve the memory.
Curious about the weird rectangular metal, Bailin scoots over to him. Li Yun enthusiastically shows him his phone and the recent picture of Bailin. The merman stares at his photo in enchantment when a notification pops up on the screen. Li Yun worriedly reads a reminder for his return flight the next day, concluding Chapter 17.
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 18: Bailin Refuses to Say Bye
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 18 begins as Li Yun turns away from Bailin, bidding him farewell. Desperately, Bailin reaches out and pulls the hem of Li Yun’s pants. The scientist looks down and sees Bailin trying his best to prevent him from leaving. The merman effectively pleads with him to stay with his eyes, concluding Chapter 18.
Chapter 19: The Desolate Arctic
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 19 begins as Li Yun kneels down to meet Bailin’s eyes. Holding his hand, he explains that they’d have to part ways. Li Yun had a home to return to, while Bailin belonged in his Arctic sanctuary. Li Yun withdraws his hand from the merman’s tight grasp, and his glove slips off.
“I’m really sorry,” he says, walking away from Bailin. The devastated merman watches the scientist leave, his glove still clasped in his webbed hand. And just like that, their adorable story seems to end. The blossoming relationship that once lit up the desolate, cold landscape dies in misery. Li Yun and his funny human ways leave Bailin’s waters for good, concluding Chapter 19.
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 20: Home is Where the Heart is
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 20 begins as Bailin sits alone in an empty cave, reminiscing about the days of ecstasy spent with his loving family. He stares at Li Yun’s glove, perhaps thinking about how the kind-hearted scientist had kept his loneliness at bay and even briefly filled the emptiness with enthusiasm and warmth. Fiddling with the black glove, he slips it onto his hand and finally reaches an understanding, concluding Chapter 20.
