Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 1 begins as Li-Yun, a research scientist, narrates the incident of his first meeting with Bailin. During a study, amid the whitewashed scenery of the Arctic, he’d come across an injured creature. The mysterious merman-like creature, which bore some resemblance to a mythical snow fairy, had its tail pierced by a harpoon. Ankle-deep in the shallow waters of the mini-lagoon, Li-Yun slowly approached him.
Li-Yun knelt next to the merman-fairy and politely offered to help. The second he reached toward the harpoon, the creature had a white, webbed hand around his throat, concluding Chapter 1.
Chapter 2: Li-Yun Disinfects the Wound
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 2 begins at the moment Li-Yun, still threatened by Bailin, had pulled the harpoon out from his attacker’s tail. The merman, beginning to realize that he was being treated, freed the scientist.
Squatting on the icy ground, Li-Yun had rummaged through his backpack. He, explaining that he’d studied medicine, gave the injured creature confidence that he would nurse his wound. Then, equipped with disinfectant and a wad of tissues, the temporary doctor warned the merman to brace for the sting of antiseptic. He gave a little spritz of the disinfectant spray onto his wound.
Immediately, Bailin had the broken harpoon to the scientist’s neck. Blinking back tears, the merman fixed Li Yun with his best accusing glare. After Li Yun apologized and regained his trust, Bailin lowered his weapon-until Li Yun cautiously sprayed the wound again, concluding Chapter 2.
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 3: Bailin Swims Away
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 3 begins as Li-Yun had finished treating Bailin’s injury. Applying a special waterproof bandage used by deep-sea divers, Li-Yun had explained that the band-aid would automatically fall off once healed.
The scientist had wondered if the creature could understand him- or if he was conversing with himself- when Bailin had dived back into the frigid Arctic waters. Watching the white tail disappear beneath the deep ocean, Li-Yun had waved farewell, concluding Chapter 3.
Chapter 4: Li-Yun Eats Snow
Li-Yun was suddenly hit with the realization that he’d let an ‘actual mermaid’ leave, kicking off Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 4. His research scientist instinct activated, he’d yelled at the mythical creature to return and reprimanded himself for letting such an extraordinary discovery swim away from him.
In the middle of his taxing job- of staring at the open sea in despair- Li-Yun’s stomach had noisily growled. Sighing in disappointment, he’d balled up a small snowball and eaten it- much to the confusion of Bailin, who’d been watching his strange savior from nearby. The merman squinted his electric blue eyes at him, concluding Chapter 4.
Chapter 5: Bailin Brings a Peace Offering
As Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 5 begins, Li-Yun sits on a small foldable chair by a makeshift tent. With his small fire burning like a beacon of warmth amid the white desert, his campsite is the picture of a cozy Arctic night-out. Li-Yun had been pondering the four data samples he still needed and the few weeks that it would take him to reach his base, when something had caught his eye.
Trying to be inconspicuous, Bailin had been quietly dropping off a small fish for Li-Yun. When he’d been caught in the action, recognized by the sharp scientist, the shy merman had instantly disappeared beneath the blue waters. Li-Yun, shouting at him to wait, had found himself once again staring at the empty ocean. Another meeting had been foiled. But wait! Not this time- because a white head bobs back up, concluding Chapter 5.
Chapter 6: Arctic Flowers
“I’m so glad you came back,” Li-Yun had exclaimed to the merman, beginning Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 6. He expresses his happiness at seeing Bailin swimming around healthily and thanks him for the fish.
With the unforgiving, icy terrain as the backdrop, both Bailin and Li-Yun blush, marking the start of a beautiful story. As they stared at each other, something new blossomed. Who said nothing could grow in the deep freeze?
Bailin spontaneously dives back into the ocean, which surprises Li Yun, and returns with his arms full of fish for his new friend, concluding Chapter 6.
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 7: Mermaids Eat Sushi
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 7 begins as Bailin intently watches Li-Yun eat his fish. Li-Yun makes an incision, removes the bones, cooks it over a fire, and finally bites into it. He notices the mermaid’s shocked face, realizing that human beings must eat differently from the mythical species.
He offers Bailin a fish and prompts him to demonstrate his own fish-eating habits. Bailin- dismissing all Li-Yun’s complications- tears into the raw fish. In an efficient two bites, the fish is gone (we humans need to learn), concluding Chapter 7.
Chapter 8: The Relentless Waves
Sweating with nervousness, Li-Yun notes that his mermaid friend had been monitoring him for days, starting Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 8. He ponders the situation, wondering for a split second if Bailin wanted to eat him (a scientist has to have his hypotheses), and decides to try communicating with him instead.
He waves his hand in a simple ‘come here’ gesture. Bailin stays still for a moment and then repeats the movement in confusion. Despite the apparent muddle, Li-Yun enthusiastically declares that they were communicating. He waves again, and Bailin simply repeats the gesture. Again. So it goes, on and on, until Li-Yun frustratedly wonders what’s happening, concluding Chapter 8.
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 9: Li-Yun Names Bailin
Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 9 begins as Li-Yun realizes that the mermaid can’t decipher his language at all. When Li Yun asks him if he has a name, he stares at him blankly.
Li-Yun decides to christen him: Bailin (meaning white scales). However, Bailin still remains lost at sea when it comes to Li-Yun’s words, and doesn’t understand his new title. When Li-Yun points at him, Bailin grabs his finger in confusion, concluding Chapter 9.
Chapter 10: Bailin Explores Li-Yun’s Campsite
Li-Yun, arms outstretched, welcomes Bailin to his humble campsite, beginning Bailin and Li Yun Chapter 10. Bailin, who’d finally understood to waddle out of the water, curiously explores his camp. As he fiddles with everything, Li-Yun realizes that it felt nice to finally talk to someone, even if he couldn’t understand him.
A while later, Li-Yun begins to realize the disadvantage of giving an inquisitive merman access to his belongings. Like a toddler, Bailin toys with Li-Yun’s food rations and tries to eat every inedible item in his camp (he plays with the granola bar and bites into the wrapper). Panicked, Li-Yun follows the merman around while he unintentionally trashes his items. When Bailin begins to break Li-Yun’s data samples, he brings out a red stop sign, concluding Chapter 10.
