In A Spell for A Smith Chapter 11-20, Brahm and Ivy’s bond gets closer and the two navigate their feelings toward each other. Ivy is terrified of letting someone in, yet she is daring to try, and Brahm is unsure if he is intruding into her space. The two ponder what the other feels about them and test their bond.
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 11: Closer
In A Spell for A Smith Chapter 11, Ivy thinks of the way Brahm is eager to help and how kind and considerate he is. Ivy wonders about him and what he thinks of her. Looking at her reflection, she touches her scars and chides herself for thinking that way. Peeking into the bedroom, she sees him sound asleep and smiles at how her presence doesn’t seem to affect him. She makes him tea when he’s up and feels extremely happy when he doesn’t ask if it’s poisoned.
However, things get hot and awkward when Ivy checks Brahm’s shoulder to make sure it’s healing. She quickly moves away, saying she’ll get some more salve. She tries to catch a hold of herself and peeks back to find him petting Thistle. A Spell for A Smith Chapter 11 ends Ivy assuring herself getting a little bit closer wouldn’t hurt.
Chapter 12: Like A Deer
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 12 opens with Brahm finally going back to the town. On Ivy’s doorstep, he thanks her sincerely for her hospitality and says he wishes he could stay longer. Awkwardly, she handed out his jacket, in which she had sewn a protection charm. Realizing, she apologizes if she overstepped a boundary but Brahm holds the jacket in wonder. He watches the beautiful design and cannot recall the last time someone had done something like this for him. As Ivy splutters on, nervous, he holds her hand gently and thanks him for everything she’s done. Promising they will meet again, he walks away.
Ivy tells Thistle everything is back to normal now. However, she watches the empty house with sadness. Brahm on the other hand thinks how quickly things had changed for him. He was drinking away his sorrows one moment, feeling so low and on the verge of giving up. The next moment Ivy appears. Blushing at the thought of her, he covers his face and thinks how she is like a deer, shy and watchful. Like a deer, she is graceful but always poised to run. He thinks to himself earning a deer’s trust takes time and is glad that he’s a patient man, concluding A Spell for A Smith Chapter 12.
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 13: Ivy’s Hopes
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 13 opens with Jon and Thom fretting over Brahm’s disappearance and scolding him for not giving them details of what happened other than “that wee witch woman, Ivy”. Brahm softly blushes at that, which doesn’t go unnoticed by the other two. Shocked, they say they never expected him to be that sort of guy since he’s always grumpy. Teasing him, they ask him to elaborate and when he goes on and on about her, the two share a knowing look. He says the bloody forsaken town has no idea what a gem she is and says a proper town would have called her a sorceress and praised her. Trying to hide his smile, Jon asks if he will see her again. Annoyed, he calls out the couple for being too smug.
Meanwhile, Ivy is enjoying the snowy forest and notes how she is optimistic for the first time about heading to town. At the shed, Jon and Brahm go through their inventory and restock. As they do, Jon sees Ivy outside and calls out to Brahm. He watches her being scorned and glared at by the villagers and hates every minute of it. Heading back home, she curses herself for thinking humans changed just because of one pleasant interaction. Confused, she thinks of Brahm who talked to her, trusted her, and shared meals with her. A Spell for A Smith Chapter 13 ends with Ivy looking towards the town, wondering what stops the people from doing so too.
Chapter 14: No More Hiding
In A Spell for A Smith Chapter 14, Ivy refreshes the protection charms she has hung around the woods for her safety. She heads out with a bag full of charms and hangs them around trees and in front of her house. Finally done, she goes back to her home, exhausted and glad she got it over with. She relaxes in a chair, happy, now that no one can find them. However, she thinks of Brahm and quickly pushes away thoughts of him, saying hiding is what’s best for them and their protection. Frustrated, she quickly sets to work on woven spells, desperate for a distraction.
As Ivy weaves, she remembers her mother telling her how magical they are and that their golden eyes are proof of it. She recalls her mother saying that a part of themselves is the most powerful magic ingredient they have. Tying a piece of her hair to her charm, she finishes her work. She goes to bed, ready to sleep, but thoughts invade her. Wondering if she is cutting herself away from everything and rejecting the possibility of a friend, she reasons that letting people in would mean giving them the chance to hurt her. Thinking of Brahm she ponders whether he even wants to have a bond with her. A Spell for A Smith Chapter 14 ends with Ivy heading out and removing all the charms she had placed in the woods.
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 15: A Roof Fixation
In A Spell for A Smith Chapter 15, Brahm is hiding behind a tree, right in front of Ivy’s home, with supplies all around him. He takes a deep breath and heads out, snapping in every branch he can see so as not to catch her off guard. As he reaches the front door, Ivy opens it and asks what he’s doing here. Holding the lumber up, he says it’s high time he paid her back. Surprised, she shyly hides behind the door and says it’s not necessary but he shakes her off. Smiling, she thanks him and tells him to let her know if he needs anything.
As Brahm sets to work, Ivy closes the door and panics. Panting hard, she says she wanted him to find her but at the same time is unnerved he came back. She regrets removing the protection charms and questions her sanity. As she panics and trembles, Thistle rubs against her feet. Hugging the cat, she reminds herself that he’s a friend and wouldn’t harm her. He watches from inside as he works on the roof and smiles to herself.
Once Brahm’s done, Ivy offers him tea and invites him in but he says he wouldn’t like to intrude on her anymore. He says he saw her in town the other day and invited her to the forge. Looking away, she says she doesn’t visit town often, and whenever she does it’s awful. Feeling sad, he reaches out a hand to comfort her but she turns away, saying he should leave. A Spell for A Smith Chapter 15 ends with Ivy watching him go and saying it would be best to keep her a secret or else the people would hate him too.
Chapter 16: Magic
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 16, opens with Brahm at the shed, zoned out while Jon yells his name. Startled, he looks up and the other guy complains about his moping. Brahm argues he was only thinking at which Jon smirks and says he can bet he knows about whom. Running a hand through his hair, he admits he’s worried about her and confused as to why she isolates herself like that. He wonders aloud if it’s by choice or if the villagers chased her away. Getting riled up again, he demands to know from Jon what his people have against magic. Jon says they connect any bad omen to the witches and blame them for everything, he says he’s glad he went out of town to study or else he would’ve ended up like them. Annoyed, Brahm notes how that’s a pathetic reason to ostracize Ivy.
Awkward, Jon asks about how magic doesn’t bother him at all and slowly asks if dwarves have magic. Brahm’s cold stare makes him more nervous and splutter. He says it’s different with dwarves and that they find their magic within the Earth, unlike witches who are born with them. He says some dwarves practice it for years and get an ability, to study gems and stones and make incredible magical items. Brahm thinks of a blue stoned ring and looks down at his empty hands. Getting out of his head, he shoos Jon away, saying he’s got plenty of work. The next scene shows Brahm in his house, wearing the blue stoned ring and admiring it. However, he immediately takes it off and tosses it aside, covering his face, concluding A Spell for A Smith Chapter 16.
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 17: Brahm’s Frustrations
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 17 opens with Ivy feeling restless and annoyed. Finally bursting, she rants to Thistle, asking if she’s being mocked by Brahm and the villagers. She wonders if he was simply being kind and if she read too much into it. Calming herself, she turns away, saying she has never had guests and never needs them now. Contradicting herself, she says she hopes everything goes back to normal.
Thom, Jon, and Brahm gather for a drink. Jon and Thom exchange a glance before Thom says he too had been pining when he was in love. Brahm interrupts him, pointing an accusing finger and saying he’s not pining or in love. Holding his hands up, he explains he just wanted to say that it feels better if he talks about it. Jon adds on, suggesting he go see Ivy if he wants to. Exhaling, Brahm says he made himself too comfortable in her space and that she had just let him in out of kindness.
Brahm worries about being a nuisance to Ivy and says this is a test of some sort to see if she wants to see him or not. He says he would like her to make the next move if she is indeed interested, and would wait no matter how unpleasant the wait is. Pausing, Jon reminds him they are there for him no matter what, and asks if he thinks she’s worth it. He asks if all his thinking and stress would amount to anything if it just ends in friendship. Pondering, he says he believes she will be worth it. Sharing another glance, Thom gives a cheer to waiting and Brahm smiles, concluding A Spell for A Smith Chapter 17.
Chapter 18: An Awkward Interaction
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 18 opens with Ivy having had enough of the wait and deciding to go see Brahm. Assuring herself it can’t get any worse, she gets ready and storms off. As she goes, she thinks of what to say and, none working, she decides to get it over with. She heads to forge and sees him working. Hearing the knocking on the frame, he calls out he’ll be with them in a moment, not turning around. Smiling, she says, “Take your time”, at which he turns sharply, face lighting up and exclaiming, “Ivy!!”
Brahm quickly invites Ivy in and tidies up the place. Smiling, she says it’s great to see him too and he asks if there’s a reason she dropped by. Fumbling, she says she would like to get some hair bands for her, the sort he has on his beard. Seeing his blank expression and getting nervous, she quickly apologizes saying it might be too below what he usually does. He cuts her off, saying he could fashion her something and that he would love that change of pace. She thanks him and an awkward silence ensues. Saying she left something on the stove, she quickly turns and leaves, thanking him again. A Spell for A Smith Chapter 18 ends with Brahm, smiling and watching her go.
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 19: Ivy’s Doubts
In A Spell for A Smith Chapter 19, Ivy is mortified at her interaction with Brahm. Him being a great blacksmith, she waltzed in just to ask for hair fastenings. She cringes hard, hating how she keeps hoping for him to come by. She notes she wanted to be noticed by someone and that feeling seen by someone after so long made her want more. Replaying the interaction over and over again, she holds her head and falls on the grass, deciding she will never leave the house again.
In the town, Brahm is happy and whistling about. Jon asks if this means that she likes him too and the dwarf brushes him off, saying she just wanted something made. Smug, the other guy asks about hair bands and how it means something different to dwarves. Cutting him off before he says further, Brahm says she just needed hair ornaments and nothing else. He explains that since she’s not a dwarf it wouldn’t mean anything and Jon counters that by saying that he’s a dwarf and he’s the one making them. The next scene shows Brahm watching his work, beautiful golden-colored hair bands with intricate leaf carvings. Nervous, he scoops them up and thinks to himself, “This is it”, concluding A Spell for A Smith Chapter 19.
Chapter 20: The Golden Bands
A Spell for A Smith Chapter 20 opens with Ivy thinking about her lonely but safe home when she suddenly hears a knock. Heart fluttering, she opens the door and greets Brahm. Apologizing for coming in so late, he enters and says he wanted to deliver them as soon as he was done. As he takes her hand in his, her heart beats faster, and she watches in awe the beautiful bands he drops in her hand. She thinks to herself that change can be good too.
Ivy asks Brahm how they are to be used since she wouldn’t want to lose any. Hesitating, he suggests he could show her if she wants, pulling a chair out for her to sit. As she sits on the chair, Brahm tries to get his hands to stop shaking and slowly takes her hair in his hands. He lushes at its softness and tries to calm his hammering heart. Meanwhile, Ivy revels in the gentleness of his hands, trying to hold back tears.
Done with the braiding, Brahm fastens the bands and asks Ivy if they are fine. Admiring them, she turns back and thanks him sincerely. Hearts beating faster at their eye contact, the two are at a loss for words. She asks him how much it costs, at which he quickly shakes his head. Determined to not make it a gift, she places an arm on his shoulder, insisting. They both pause at that, watching her hand, and Ivy quickly retracts it. Smiling, Brahm admits he could use some spells, concluding A Spell for A Smith Chapter 20.
