Are you ready to be deprived of the comfort of scrolling through your favorite piracy site? Well, if you are not, then get ready because Naver and WEBTOON Entertainment are targeting pirated Webtoon alternative sites by filing a DMCA subpoena demanding Cloudflare disclose information about 170+ copyright websites.
In this latest legal action against pirated webtoon alternative websites, the company’s anti-piracy partner, Remove Your Media, stated in the documents, “The purpose of the accompanying subpoena is to obtain the identity of the alleged copyright infringer (s) in control of the internet domain (s)/website (s) listed in the subpoena. The information obtained will be used only for the purpose of protecting the rights granted to my client.” (Source: TorrentFreak)

ToggleWhy is it Necessary to Take Action Against Pirated Webtoon Alternative Websites?
Earlier this week, WEBTOON filed the request in a Texas federal court. The popular digital comics publisher has had some triumphs regarding this issue, the most recent in 2023, when the company targeted hundreds of piracy sites in a subpoena request, and Webtoon banned over 150 sites.
Fighting these pirated websites is one way the platform plans to boost revenue. Unauthorized third parties harm WEBTOON’s reputation and financial performance. The company states in its SEC filing, “If a significant number of our users turn to counterfeit products for reasons such as lower prices, our revenue and growth could be adversely affected.”
Moreover, Kakao also revealed their plan to take down the largest comic piracy in the world (starting with ‘M’) by joining hands with Japanese publishers. One X user reacted by saying, “Instead of wasting time on something pointless (fr, you shut down one site and 20 more will pop up), how about letting overseas readers access your comics in English? People go to those sites because they can’t access your comics in their region.”
Webtoon Banned Illegitimate Sites through DMCA Subpoena
Despite the demand by DMCA subpoena, several operators will naturally not present their authentic information, which reduces the efficacy of these efforts. However, since domains can be bought straight from Cloudflare, the company reserves the right to cease those websites at its discretion.
Many of the targeted websites in the DMCA subpoena request have millions of page visits. Some of the known sites are asuratoon.com (56 million monthly visits, according to Similarweb) and manga fire.to (26.6M), Bato.to (25.2), mangareader.to (10.6m), exceeding over 100M+ monthly page visits combined.
Within hours, the news of this latest legal action took over the internet. WEBTOON banned or is trying to ban third-party websites—how do you think manga/anime fans would react? Naturally, fans are concerned about their go-to piracy websites. Following the news, several X users reacted, showing their frustration and providing legitimate reasons for using piracy sites. Let’s see how fans are responding to this shocking legal action.
The fans’ concern is absolutely justified, as these piracy sites have helped them discover several underrated Korean manhwa as well as popular manhwa like Solo Leveling. One of the primary reasons behind the manga/manhwa readers’ frustration is the similarity among most stories, which restrains fans from exploring new genres. Nonetheless, Tower of God Season 2 is doing exceedingly well, resuming after four years.
