Prophecies are always meant to be followed, and Castle Swimmer is all about that. For instance, in Narnia, two boys and two girls, with the help of Aslan the lion, will end the evil witch’s rule and usher in a new, peaceful era in Narnia’s history. In Harry Potter, a boy born at the end of July 1980 had the power to defeat Lord Voldemort. Also, in Game of Thrones, the prophecy claims that Azor Ahai shall be born again and again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone.
Every fantasy story has a key feature: prophecy, and the character’s life revolves around this prophecy. But what if the said character does not follow the prophecy? Then how will the story unfold? What kind of fantasy story goes against the prophecy?
Castle Swimmer is a webtoon that has broken all the stereotypes of your typical mermaid fantasy story. It is an adventurous tale of two mermaid tales who want to make their path. ![Prince Siren trying to console Kappa](https://animemangatoon.b-cdn.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/dfb239664fc1a6bc7123b10eed0507de-750x375.jpg)
Multiple prophecies revolved around the Beacon and Kappa. For instance, these prophecies were – to gift someone immortality, to provide riches, or to make someone’s armor impenetrable. The story starts with the booming voice of the God of the surface and the creator of the World – “Welcome to existence, Little Mer.”
So you see everyone had their prophecy that the Beacon had to fulfill. But the House Shark prophecy is a little different. The Prince Siren, the only prince of the Shark house would kill the Beacon with a spear and the blood of Kappa would break the curse that the people are suffering from.
The curse had taken over the people of House Shark, killing them over the centuries. They were cursed by the mini God, Neris, whose blood was a poison. And as he bled away, he cursed them that they would be the target of tragedy and despair. Their body would be a collection of scars and wounds until nothing was left of them.
Kappa and Siren have big responsibilities but Siren does not want to kill an innocent being and Kappa wants to die to fulfill the prophecy. Kappa and Siren are not your typical main characters who are strong and cold-hearted. Despite the odds, they fell in love and set out to carve their destiny. But for how long they will run away from their fate?

Kappa
“I don’t wanna be The Beacon.” – KAPPA CASTLE SWIMMER
Kappa was born from a golden orb. So it’s not surprising that he is a shiny golden color mermaid. He also has a tan skin and brown eyes. Another name of Kappa is “the Beacon,” one who will fulfill all the prophecies. However, Kappa has a different personality from that of other heroes. They have strong and cold-hearted personalities, but Kappa has a childlike personality that makes him playful and flirty.
Even though he is very energetic, he is still self-conscious of his actions, afraid that he cannot help others. His way of expressing his feelings can be dramatic sometimes, as you can see throughout the story. Everyone thinks that he will do anything to fulfill the prophecies, even if he has to die, but Kappa is not like that.
LGBTQ+ Representation
“Our dashing young Prince is in his prime! The Boys must be lining up!”
In an interview with the Comics Beat, the writer of the Castle Swimmer webtoon talked about the LGBTQ+ representation in the story. When the interviewer, Avery Kaplan, asked Wendy about the queer representation she answered that this is not new as she is gay. She told the interviewer that in the early version of Castle Swimmer, she wanted the characters to be gay as she was not out of the closet yet. But in her head, they were secretly gay.
Wendy has a unique way of representing the community. She didn’t blatantly add the gay couple where they have to say every minute that they are gay. She highlighted this subtly and beautifully. From sexuality to gender, Wendy handled everything perfectly. For example: Women characters were not overly sexualized. You can say that Wendy was able to craft Castle Swimmer in a way that shows the equal roles of all.
