Selfish Romance Chapter 9: Reunions And Secrets

Selfish Romance Chapter 9 opens with a surprise meeting between Hagyeong and Yumin after a long time apart. Yumin is shocked—but thrilled—to discover that Hagyeong is Sojeong’s stylist these days. In their conversation, Hagyeong inadvertently mentions Yumin’s supposed affair with her brother, momentarily forgetting that they are not even dating.
At that time, Hagyeong is called back to work. She apologizes to Sojeong for leaving, explaining that she got stuck meeting an old friend. Sojeong is aware of their relationship and asks about their closeness. Hagyeong explains that she and Yumin had been high school friends but hadn’t seen each other for some time. As soon as Hagyeong has left, curiosity gets the best of Sojeong and she checks Yumin’s social media. And then it hits her: Isn’t this the same girl she caught Hyeondo with the other day?
In the meantime, Hyeondo and Taegeun are having an earnest conversation—or at least Taegeun is. He’s desperate to know who Hyeondo is seeing, but he evades every inquiry.
Things start heating up when Hyeondo invites Yumin out to a bar that her boyfriend used to go to. There, he takes her. Hyeondo witnesses Yumin doing the whole hammy girlfriend-in-the-work thing—total hyper-appealing ideal-gf vibe—in the bar, so much that he finds it slightly off-putting. He informs her that, from their pact, they are not required to do anything other than be happy just for the optics.
Yumin tells him if she is to pretend to be the world’s happiest girlfriend, he has to do the same. Hyeondo laughs nastily, informing her their relationship is fake. With a superior smile, Yumin responds, “I’m not an actress… but I’m sure I can manage.” Thus the deception continues, ending Selfish Romance Chapter 9.
Chapter 10: Playing the Perfect Couple
Selfish Romance Chapter 10 opens with Yumin determined to keep up the act and instructs Hyeondo to do the same. Hyeondo, perched on a stool at the bar, watching happy couples around him, thinks carefully before speaking. Ironically, nobody has ever praised him for looking cheerful. Yumin latches herself onto him again before he can think about it too hard, playfully asking him why he’s being so serious. Startled, he asked her not to overdo it.
Trying to keep up appearances, Hyeondo takes a photo to post on social media. But while he scrolls through his feed, his gaze remains glued to a news article on Sojeong. Why hasn’t she answered yet? Before he can think about it some more, Yumin fires him with a barrage of questions: Do you like her? Is she your type? Are you her fan?!
Rolling his eyes, Hyeondo corrects her for mispronouncing Sojeong’s name repeatedly and instead addresses her as “Yujin.” Yumin teases him saying he is too shy to pronounce it correctly. Hyeondo attempts to instruct her to give up the charade. However, Yumin has a come-back prepared, in that if she is pretending, then he can pretend too for her. Hyeondo smiles and utters, “And what if I don’t?” With a mischievous grin, Yumin confirms—she’ll display herself openly, visit his restaurant constantly, and drive him totally wild with her presence. Hyeondo re-thinks and says, “I’ll play along.”
During the return trip home, Yumin’s attempt to meet her ex fails. As she and Hyeondo stroll together, she admits that she always thought the beauty mark above his eyebrow is awesome. She complains about how unfair it is for him to have two beauty marks. As she leaves, he chuckles, “Beauty marks? Ridiculous,” ending Selfish Romance Chapter 10.
Selfish Romance Chapter 11: Unspoken Feelings and Unexpected Reunions
Selfish Romance Chapter 11 opens with flashbacks, taking us back in time when Hyeondo and Sojeong were together. Sojeong teases Hyeondo, asking him to get his earlobe and his eyelid pierced. Much to her surprise, he agrees without so much as batting an eyelid. Sojeong cannot help but wonder why he always acquiesces to what she wants, even if she just teases. She says something about his hair, advising him to grow it out to conceal his sharp eyes.
In the next scene, Yumin, Jihu, and their coworkers are having a night out at Hyeondo’s bar. The tension between Taegeun and Jihu is clear from their first encounter. Out of the blue, one of her workmates asks Yumin whether she’s dating Hyeondo. Yumin flatly denies this when Jihu persists in asking. In her mind, Yumin frets about how she’ll break the news to Jihu about the whole “fake dating” fiasco. Jihu, however, is convinced that she and Hyeondo would make a good couple.
Hyeondo thinks the only similarity between them is that both of them are unable to move on from their past lovers. Yumin teasingly says that she would go out with Hyeondo if he asked her. Before she can even utter the words, Hyeondo has arrived bearing their food, so Yumin is left caught off guard and does not know what to say. He quietly leaves, promising to return with the rest of their meal.
As everyone remains relaxed and chatting, Yumin’s careless comment remains in Hyeondo’s mind. Would she go out with him if he approached her? Suddenly, his phone rings. He wishes it would be a message from Yumin, but to his surprise, it is from Sojeong, ending Selfish Romance Chapter 11.
Chapter 12: Unspoken Words and Unfinished Business
Selfish Romance Chapter 12 starts with Taegeun bringing in the leftover food to the table, but Hyeondo is not normal. He rushes out of the restaurant and tells Taegeun to shut it down for the day, leaving everyone perplexed about what’s happening.
Hyeondo runs out to get a cab, but Sojeong’s manager stops him, already waiting. Together, they head to Sojeong’s house, where the manager reassures him that she’s fine—her legs simply gave way during the shoot, and she just needs some rest.
When they reach Sojeong’s apartment, she’s lying in bed, eagerly waiting for Hyeondo. When she sees him, she smiles with complete ecstasy, stating that this is the first time they’ve met in such a situation after their quarrel. Sojeong invites him to spend the night with her, but Hyeondo, who remains icy, thinks of leaving the bedroom and going out. He inquires of the manager whether he can use the kitchen to prepare food for her before he leaves.
The manager insists that he stay and eat dinner with Sojeong, but Hyeondo will not comply, coolly stating that they’ve broken up, so there’s no point. Hours pass, and Sojeong finally comes out of her room, to find that Hyeondo is already gone. She scolds the manager for not being able to get him to stay.
Peachy keen, Sojeong asks the manager to take her to Hyeondo’s house. But since he moved, there is no indication where he lives now. She then asks him to take her to his restaurant instead.
The chapter ends in a cliffhanger. We see Hyeondo and Yumin together, having a low-key moment. But what really transpired between them? Will Sojeong locate him, or has something irretrievably changed? Selfish Romance Chapter 12 ends on this note.
Selfish Romance Chapter 13: Unspoken Feelings
As Yumin walks back home with friends, she is unable to shake off thoughts about Hyeondo. Is he okay? she wonders. Did something happen to him with his ex?
Upon her return, she notices that the lights in the restaurant are on and, being nervous, enters the restaurant. What she finds shocks her—Hyeondo, lying unconscious at the table. Her heart jumps as she runs to his side, terrified. Exhausted, she falls on the ground, trying to find a way to reach Taegeun.
Before she can, Hyeondo stirs, his voice raspy as he abruptly asks, “Are you all right? Has your fever cleared?” Yumin blinks in bewilderment. He looks intoxicated, she wonders, flustered. She shakes her head and instructs him to rest, but as she turns to go, he abruptly seizes her hand. “I missed you.” Her breath is caught. But then it occurs to her—he’s not speaking to her. He’s referring to his former lover.
Yumin clamps her jaw. Why is he missing her if he was the one to end it? She attempts to relax her hand softly, speaking to him, “I’m not her, Hyeondo. I’m Yumin.” She glares at him. “Do you even know me?” Hyeondo remains quiet for a second before answering, “Of course. You’re the woman who threw a wallet at me and wanted me to pretend to date you.”.Yumin breathes out, swearing under her breath for being so reckless that day. But Hyeondo catches her off guard by smiling—a real, genuine smile.“I’m glad you threw it at me.” His words hang in the air, leaving Yumin speechless. It is to wonder if he said that cause he was intoxicated?
Chapter 14: Unraveling Memories
In Selfish Romance Chapter 14, Hyeondo drifts on memories of his own life, re-experiencing the events that led to his complex relationships. Sojeong’s pain continues to haunt his mind—her sorrow, her turmoil, they have always been his. And yet, through it all, Yumin had invaded his life, literally leaping into his life the day she flung his wallet at him.
Shrugging off the weight of his thoughts, he suddenly quips a humorous comment that she ought to play baseball and that, in an amateur league, she’d be wonderful. Before Yumin can react, he collapses, heading straight for a deep sleep. Yumin gazes at his serene face, a tumble of emotions churning in her head. But then—she isn’t alone anymore. Sojeong has appeared at the door, her eyes fixed on Yumin.
The next morning, Hyeondo wakes up groggily, his head pounding as he tries to recall what had happened the night before. His fingers try to find his phone, and checking the CCTV, his eyes pop open in surprise. What… what in the world happened here?
At a cozy café meanwhile, Yumin encounters Hagyeong, speaking warmly over their drinks. The conversation is jovial until Yumin’s phone rings suddenly—Hyeondo is calling.
The moment Hagyeong hears the voice of a male on the phone, a deluge of anxieties overruns her. Is Yumin already in a relationship with someone else?!
Selfish Romance Chapter 15: Unfinished Conversations
Selfish Romance Chapter 15 starts off with a flashback—Hagyeong’s first meeting with Yumin. Her brother had introduced Yumin as another student of their father, and so the two’s life became a part of each other in ways beyond imagination.
In real life, Taegeun and Hyeondo sit together and talk about the events of the previous night. Taegeun inquires as to why Yumin was there in the first place, as she doesn’t live that way. Hyeondo himself had been confused about the same thing, and so he had thought of calling her.
The moment Yumin responds, Hyeondo douses her with apologies for his actions. But Yumin, not batting an eyelash, waves it off. “You’ve also seen me drunk and sloppy before, so we’re even,” she says then hangs up.
At the same time, over coffee, Hagyeong can’t resist her nosiness. “Did you have a drink last night?” she asks. They continue to chat, though it’s clear—Hagyeong’s still worried about Yumin and Hyeondo’s breakup. Yumin picks up on it and scolds herself inwardly. I’m such a boor. As they emerge, Yumin finally speaks up. I’m glad you’re safe, Hagyeong. And Iseon would be pleased if she knew. You don’t need to worry about us separating. Hagyeong hesitates, as if she’s going to speak up—perhaps that she wants Yumin and her brother to get back together. But she can’t say it before a black van stops beside them.
The door swings open wide, and to their surprise, Sojeong is sitting inside. Hagyeong steps forward and makes introductions for Yumin. Yumin is agitated, and she barely comprehends that Sojeong comes out of the car with a sugary smile. “Nice to meet you, Yumin,” she says to her, closing Selfish Romance Chapter 15.
Chapter 16: Unlikely Encounters
Selfish Romance Chapter 16 begins with Sojeong meeting Yumin. To her surprise, Sojeong finds that Yumin is a die-hard fan of her and has seen everything she has worked on, including her debut acting project in which she had a minor role and hardly any dialogue. The surprise fan meeting leaves Sojeong impressed in a pleasant way as they converse.
Sojeong, noticing a chance to connect, offers Yumin a ride to her office, and the two find it easy to continue their chat. The following weekend, Sojeong has plans to head over to visit her ex-boyfriend, Iseon. She believes it would be fantastic to run into him at the bookstore, and to her good fortune, she is right. Hyeondo is already at the bookstore, browsing the aisles when Yumin shows up.
Yumin, concerned after last night, inquires about Hyeondo’s well-being. His response is oddly cavalier— “If I get drunk and behave like that again….please hit me….I’m begging you,” Yumin is speechless at his request. Why would he do that? Why is he behaving like that? As they occupy a corner of the bookstore to read, Hyeondo casually inquires about Yumin’s ex. “He’s handsome,” continues to describe his look. Selfish Romance Chapter 16 ends with Hyeondo’s eyes contact into suspicion and he nods toward a man who looks exactly like this description, Yumin has just provided.
