Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 1: Pirate Attack

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 1 begins as 20-year-old Lottrelli Aphina, who’d fallen asleep on the hill overlooking her humble village, wakes up in a panic. She had to be home by dinner. Her mother and sister, Raltia, would be furious that she fell asleep on the job of hunting again. Lottrelli grabs her quiver and bow and sprints.
Boom! Lottrelli’s village abruptly erupts in a ball of fire. The Woohoppiage pirates swarm the burning homes, while the villagers try to hide, flee, and protect their children. Lottrelli, with her family’s safety being the only thing on her mind, dashes home, hoping they might’ve been spared from the cruelty. She overhears two pirates talking about the bird they’d come looking for, and she briefly wonders if they were talking about her Seabird.
Finally, Lottrelli pushes the door to her house open… and sees the bloody body of her mother on the ground. Lottrelli rushes to her, sobbing loudly. She wildly searches for Raltia and eventually sees her being carried away by the pirates. Before she can run after them, her own villagers attack her. “You are a curse!” another man says, “You and that bird…”
Escape in the Offing
Two weeks later, Lottrelli wakes up on a slave trade ship. One trader begins to harass the ‘ugly’ woman, before another yells at him to stop- she wasn’t going to fetch a big sum anyway, don’t lower the price further!
On the ship’s deck, Lottrelli’s majestic blue Seabird poops on the trader’s face. The bird tells her to take action soon if she wants to be free of the slave traders, while her mind races to figure out how to rescue Raltia from the pirates. Meanwhile, a 22-year-old green-eyed boy in a yellow bandana, Domem Lenkaro, spies on their ship from the railing of his ship. Keyelo Traffe, a 21-year-old red-haired boy, rests a hand on the hilt of his sword and tells him to inform the captain, concluding Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 1.
Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 2: Out of a Fairytale

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 2 begins as 15-year-old Lottrelli reads aloud a mythology about the benevolent ruler of the oceans to her 13-year-old sister Raltia: a powerful man who favoured sailors and influenced a huge territory. After he was murdered by his jealous friend, the sea and land split into factions, and the plundering pirates took over the seas. “We shouldn’t talk about them, it’s a bad omen!” Raltia exclaims, cutting Lottrelli off. Unlike her adventurous big sister, Raltia harboured no interest in savage outlaws and the mysteries of the sea. Where Lottrelli sought thrills and frequently wished to accompany her father on fishing trips, Raltia always worried about the danger of Woohoppige pirates.
“Balca and I will protect you!” Lottrelli had always assured her, pointing to the strikingly beautiful blue Seabird soaring in the sky.
Answered Prayers
Back to the present, Lottrelli intercepts a trader who raises his hand against a young girl. She bears the consequences- a bright red mark on her cheek, and gets roughly pushed down the stairs.
Below deck, Lott spots Balca through the portholes. The Seabird guiltily apologizes for the pillaging of her village, the murder of her mother, and the kidnapping of her sister (gosh, how do you even begin that apology?) Lott persuades her winged companion that it wasn’t her fault and tries to brainstorm escape plans with him. But she soon collapses out of hopelessness onto the deck, praying that something will arrive to help her.
When the trader, coming down the steps, prepares to hit Lott again, the ship rocks violently and throws him to the side. They rush to the deck to gauge the situation. A crew of swashbuckling and combat-ready pirates (each one of them supermodels straight out of a buccaneer-themed magazine photoshoot) stand aboard their ship, the Black Ocean. The captain, Clusdo, gives the order to board, and the two ships collide once again. Lott watches the group of pirates battle the slave traders and wonders who they were, concluding Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 2.
Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 3: Out of Deep Water

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 3 begins as Lott realizes that the new pirates were helping the slaves and, therefore, were possibly on her side. Clusdo fights the slave traders who’d abused Lott and the others, but the stubborn man refuses to accept defeat, even when his ship was busted, crewmates had surrendered, and slaves were lost. He grabs Lott and threatens to slit her throat if the pirates came a step closer.
Before he drives his knife home, Keyelo slashes at him from behind and slices his arm off. In the process of rushing away, the slave trader knocks Lott overboard. Still handcuffed, she starts sinking into the watery depths and slowly loses consciousness. The last thought in her mind was that she couldn’t die yet. She had to save her sister.
Later, Lott wakes up on another ship, safe and sound, in a blanket and without her handcuffs. Domem approaches her with a grin and assures her that she is secure with the Black Ocean crew. “I’m glad you’re awake,” Keyelo adds with a smile, concluding Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 3.
Chapter 4: Lottrelli’s Determination

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 4 begins as Lott, realizing that Keyelo had saved her, thanks him (and also notices his striking good looks). Keyelo and Domem discuss her bird’s overprotectiveness, and when Domem explains that he’d tried to change Lott’s clothes, she realizes that her short hair made them think she was male.
The young girl, that Lott had saved before, approaches her and explains that life was much better with the Black Ocean crew. Domem hoists her onto his shoulders and leads her towards the other happy children. Lott watches them for a moment and then strolls to the ship railing. ‘Raltia… I’m coming,’ she thinks, her electric blue eyes blazing with determination in the light of the setting sun. Over his shoulder, Keyelo looks at the rescued slave with a hint of curiosity.
Left High and Dry
The next day, the Black Ocean docks at the port of a village and drops off all the slaves. Lott, dressed in a boys’ dress shirt and pants, scans the villagers and notices a very young member of the Black Ocean. Prase, a fourteen-year-old boy, served as an errand-runner for the Captain. His older brother, Beze, was a deckhand like Domem. Keyelo explains that his young age was common among pirates and that he’d started young himself.
Utuguru, a pale man with blonde hair and the Vice-Captain of the Black Ocean, approaches Keyelo and pushes his own job of acquiring supplies into his hands. Knowing that an argument with the unreasonable man would be pointless, Keyelo silently carries out Utuguru’s order (with just a few angry grumbles).
When Clusdo begins conversing with Utuguru, Lott overhears him explain that they were chasing down the Woohoppiage. She immediately runs to them and begs, “Please take me with you!” The Captain studies her weak frame and determined stare… and tells the excited girl-or, according to everyone, not-that he knows where to station her.
“Off with the other landlubbers, boy!” he exclaims from the deck at Lott, who finds herself on the docks with the other slaves. Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 4 concludes with Lott’s disheartening situation (she should never have gotten her hopes up).
Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 5: Stow Away Or They Row Away

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 5 begins in a series of failed attempts by Lott to get back onto the Black Ocean. Balca draws Lott’s attention to Keyelo, who hoists a barrel onto his shoulders and makes his way to the ship with a chest in hand. Keyelo’s dog snarls at Balca out of dislike, and the red-haired man comments on the extraordinary bird himself, “It’s the first time I’ve met another animal who could speak.” The black dog irritably tells him that he hated Seabirds (they couldn’t even go extinct properly), and that, though they were supposedly no longer extant, Balca most definitely was one. ‘You better keep an eye on those two,’ he advises Keyelo.
Lott watches as a group of children crowd around Keyelo, admiring the pirate’s strength, and pester him to carry all of them at once. Grudgingly, Keyelo sets down the goods and swings the five children from his arms. However, when he picks up his barrel and chest again, they seem heavier than before. Keyelo’s dog, knowing what’d just happened, tries to get the oblivious pirate’s attention. But Keyelo pays him no heed and carries Lott right into the Black Ocean.
Plan B: Fight!
Once inside, without missing a beat, he asks his dog to guard the door. Lott, having figured out that Keyelo knew about her little trick, climbs out of the chest. Keyelo was a lot more perceptive than he seemed. He’d deciphered- from her half-conscious mumbles after being rescued from drowning- that Lott’s desperation to go after the Woohoppiage pirates had something to do with her sister. When Keyelo explains that it was too dangerous for her, Lott asserts, “I’d rather die trying.”
She begs for a chance to prove her place on the crew. Unable to waver the determined confidence in her eyes, Keyelo defeatedly agrees. Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 5 concludes as Lott boldly charges towards a purple-haired crew member in a fight to establish her worth.
Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 6: When Pipsqueaks Beat the Odds

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 6, as Lott gives the pirate her all: merciless strikes, clever parries, and lightning speed. But, out of everything, her trump card is the undaunted perseverance with which she fights her opponent. When he slashes Lott’s shoulder open, she keeps going. When a blow to her face leaves her bleeding, she keeps going. And when he teases Lott for being scrawny, she still keeps going.
The other crewmates try to guess the winner, and although Utuguru doesn’t think the ‘pipsqueak’ stands a chance, Keyelo seems less sure. Sure enough, Lott eventually deals the final blow to her opponent and places a foot upon his chest in victory. “Welcome to the Black Ocean crew,” Captain Clusdo says, while the defeated pirate grumbles in annoyance under Lott’s sole. Domem cheers with a triumphant smile while Utuguru yells at her like she’d just pulled off the most impossible feat in the history of shocking upsets. Meanwhile, Keyelo walks over to Lott and holds out his hand. Smiling, she shakes it, concluding Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 6.
Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 7: A Bird’s Eye View

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 7 begins as Domem enthusiastically takes Lott on a grand tour of the ship, from the slightly barbarian state of the mess hall to the quiet corridor of the officers’ quarters. He introduces her to their physician, Bredik, and she mentally realizes that she couldn’t go to him with any major injuries. What if he found out she was a girl? In the kitchen, the head chef, Johan, winks at her, making her more aware of her surroundings.
While strolling past Utuguru’s room, the arrogant pirate makes sure to cruelly threaten Lott before slamming his door shut on them. But, as they walk away, he sneaks a peek at the majestic bird perched on her shoulder. Something was different about it.
Domem leads Lott towards the showers (they may be pirates, but they aren’t uncivilized), and at that moment, Keyelo strolls out, wearing just a towel. Flustered with the view, she tries to speed up the conversation and push Domem away from the restrooms. But Balca has a different idea: ‘What a bod. I’m really digging this place, can we stay a little longer?’ she squawks.
Nesting In
Moving on (thankfully for Lott, not so much for Balca), Domem shows Lott the sleeping quarters. He explains that Keyelo, instead of the officers’ rooms, slept in the hammocks of the common quarters. Lott moves to lie down, but then the real fun begins. She’d have a special place to sleep for the first week. Domem leads Lott up to the crow’s nest and leaves her with a sparse blanket to keep warm. He hands her a spyglass and bids her goodnight with a casual warning about the routine nausea.
Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 7 concludes as Lott makes a silent promise to the twinkling stars- and her mom- that she and Raltia would be fine.
Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 8: Bedtime Stories

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 8 begins as Lott explains to Balca that she concealed her gender, not because she wanted quality time with the Balca-deemed ‘pretty boy’, but because the sea was never kind to women.
Meanwhile, Keyelo, not immune to Domem’s monstrous snoring, lies awake in his hammock. With his dog, Ten, accompanying him, Keyelo climbs above deck to sleep under the stars. He glances at the crow’s nest, wondering how Lott was doing on her first day. He asks Ten to help him sleep by narrating the ancient myth of Seabirds: The majestic birds were a blessing from the Master of the Sea, and led the sailors of yore away from danger and towards precious riches. But soon, violent wars were fought between sailors to acquire a Seabird of their own. In the ensuing damage, the Seabirds’ characteristic loyalty to a single person eventually led to their alleged extinction.
Ten might not believe the stories, but he was sure that Balca was a Seabird. And he was even more sure that Lott could hear him. While he listens, Keyelo opens a chest for something that could help him sleep. But when he glances inside, he notices that it is missing.
The next morning, Nettor, the purple-haired pirate she’d defeated, rudely wakes Lott up. Clearly sore from his humiliating defeat, he sets down a pail of water and impatiently waits for her to descend. While leaving the nest, Lott slips on something- a small glass bottle ship which rolls out from under her foot. Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 8 concludes as Lott ignores Nettor’s attempt to intimidate her with threats and brushes past him.
Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 9: The Black Ocean Mechanism

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 9 begins as Lott swabs the deck with help from a chatty Domem. When Keyelo walks by them with Ten at his feet, she pretends not to hear the dog’s comments. Though he tries to goad Lott into revealing that she could understand him, she holds her ground.
‘For a pirate, he’s quite polite,’ she notices, while observing Keyelo. Domem describes the red-haired vice-captain as the ‘lone wolf type’ who wasn’t normally good with people. At that moment, the second vice-captain, Utuguru, strides past them with a stern order to keep scrubbing the deck. He shoulders past Keyelo to talk to Captain Clusdo and tells him to leave. And although every fiber of his body disagrees, Keyelo complies.
Domem explains that the two men were always at loggerheads with each other. Not only that, they were brothers. Captain Clusdo’s wife was Utuguru’s mother, while Keyelo was an illegitimate child. Because of the complicated past, Keyelo’s title didn’t carry the same authority as his step-brother’s. Some pirates didn’t even acknowledge his vice-captaincy.
In the Heart of Things
Later, while working, Lott feels Utuguru’s eyes on her… or were they on Balca? When a call for help in the engine room spreads, Domem uses the situation to give Lott a tour of the only room he didn’t cover.
In the engine room, Lott finds herself surrounded by massive machinery complete with pipes, valves, and wispy steam, ominously lit by the glow of green magic stones. Lott greets Beze and Prase, who shyly dash away, while Domem explains the working of the ‘heart of the Black Ocean’. Lott helps haul the heavy power stones while overhearing their status on tracking the Woohoppiage. Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 9 concludes as Captain Clusdo calls for Lott and asks why she was after the pirates.

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 10: Davy Jones’s Contract

Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 10 begins as Captain Clusdo states, “I know everything about my crew, lad. Every scar, every sob story, everything that put them on my ship.” He needed transparency to be able to trust the pirates on his ship… but he didn’t know anything about Lott. How could he when she refused to reveal any information?
Captain Clusdo pushes a contract towards her, which states full disclosure as one of the terms, and asks Lott to sign it. When she still refuses, Utuguru aggressively holds her head down and angles a knife to her throat. Clusdo calmly asks him to step back and patiently waits for Lott to talk.
Knowing that any slip-ups would lead them to learn her two secrets- Balca’s value and her gender- she tells them about her sister’s capture. However, she swaps the details of their obsession with her Seabird for a white lie: Her sister, Raltia, was known for her extreme beauty, and that’s why they’d taken her captive. Despite the untruth, she signs their terms and conditions anyway (that definitely won’t cause problems later!)
Sailing Close to the Wind
When Clusdo asks her who she’d choose between the Black Ocean crew and Raltia, Lott is tempted to choose her sister. However, she thinks about young Prase and changes her mind. “I’ll find a way to save her without sacrificing others,” she says sincerely, “This is my mission- if there’s any collateral damage, it’ll be me.”
Clusdo explains that she’d be at home among the Black Ocean crew; everyone had something to hold against the Woohoppiage. Including his desire for redemption. After she leaves, the captain tells Utuguru to keep an eye on ‘him’, knowing that she was hiding something.
She walks across the deck when Ten suddenly jumps onto her. The glass bottle ship flies out of Lott’s pocket, and Keyelo’s eyes widen. Lott catches it before it can shatter, concluding Seabird and the Wolf Chapter 10.
