She checks his phone, feeling regular around him.

After a few moments later, he is running with two friends. “Last night felt too long, didn’t it?” one of them asks, laughing. Ashlyn smiles softly and replies, “Yeah, but at least I’m done with my homework”. Their conversation is comfortable, nothing about the nightmare he will soon face. As they move together, an ordinary school day unfolds.

Believe me, I know how it feels!” Meanwhile, Ashlyn sits quietly, lost in thought. A vivid flashback catches him, drawing him back to a memory he wants to forget. In her mind she sees him as a monster, dark and approaching, who plops down, chills her to the bone and voices telling her “we could do worse .” The words resonate, and she bursts out of him, her heart pounding, as she realizes why the flashback shakes her so badly.
