If you are wondering whether you should start reading Refund High School or not, let me try to convince you. Have you ever wondered what would happen –
– If there was a connection between the real world and the world of deceased souls?
– Would there be superpowers?
– Will we find something eye-opening about our death?
If you are one of such people, the Refund High School webtoon is for you. I find the outer world quite fascinating, which eventually landed me in this popular reincarnation manhwa. In this blog, we will look at Aru Kim’s life before she ends up in the titular school.
Refund High School begins with the introduction of the protagonist – Aru Kim. It describes her main profession and personality as a high schooler. And, by personality, I mean that her whole world revolves around the cliché standards of a teenager set by society, i.e. wanting to have a boyfriend and if you don’t have one, your life is basically boring.
Refund High School Chapter 1: Meet Aru Kim
Aru Kim is studious, hardworking and is currently a SAT aspirant, but that’s not the only competition her parents pushed her in, the other one is- Finding a boyfriend! ( an actor-looking boyfriend to be specific). She often finds herself being compared to the other kids by her mom ( the typical Asian family core), such as her cousin who bagged both – A university seat and a boyfriend. On the other hand, along with the boyfriend’s taunt, her mom never misses the “Don’t Eat That!” She also hits Aru’s head for eating the pumpkin pancakes.
Now after the introduction, we see Aru rushing towards school. Her only goals are to study hard for the SAT exam and to finally have a boyfriend (the real goal). At the beginning of her school days, she sees various people holding each other’s hands and having clingy talks, telling each other ‘The L word.”
Moving on, Aru being a daydreamer, lying on her bed stalks her favourite Instagram celeb – Gunn Ryu. He has the typical lean body, sharp jawline, and the cutest smile that can sway you away (excuse the exaggeration). Aru continues to think about how it would be so great if she and Gunn Ryu were a thing in real life. They would be together all the time, and people would be jealous of them, wondering how she landed him, and whatnot! A few hours into daydreaming, she realizes she is getting late for classes.
The actual plot twist comes next, where all my interest grew!! Refund High School Chapter 1 concludes with suspense: where Aru Kim dies! (But the catch is, she doesn’t know she is dead until she witnesses her body lying on the ground!)
“Am I Dead?”
Episode 2 starts with a story revolving around the pop culture of the Korean industry, where singers and musicians collide to compete with each other as at the end of the day, it is all about followers and fame. The characters include Sehui and Mari, both talented musicians, but Mari slightly had the upper hand of being the famous one because, on the other hand, Sehui didn’t even start her career, but her passion and skills landed her into an album with Mari. This chapter answers how Aru Kim died and how it is related to these girls.

Refund High School Chapter 4: The Other World
Chapter 4 continues with the suspense of ARU’s death and then brings the plot twist by introducing a new and one of the main characters – The God of Death: The Grim Reaper! The story now gives us the link between the actual real world and the world through the dead’s eyes. It shows how the souls of the dead people are still around and swaying, which leaves ARU (and all the readers) stunned and with a lot of questions.
Refund High School Chapter 4 is where we get introduced to ‘The Other World.’ By the pace of the story, I felt that this would be another “Dead people watching over the living ones” chapter. However, what I witnessed shook me and compelled me to keep scrolling! This chapter includes our very own new character-KING YEMMA! To be honest, by far, she’s the most eye-catching character, clad in a black gown with beautiful hair, making her the perfect ‘Powerful – attractive’ character, with the attitude of a monarch!
Aru Kim gets to choose between: A. Reincarnation (but into an invertebrate) B. Go to a co-ed Buddhist school of Reincarnations. So, of course, we all know what she chose. As she steps into the school, she encounters the other three people who died with her.
First Day At Reincarnation School
Refund High School Chapter 5 shows the first day of Aru Kim in the titular school. They begin their first day in school with a welcome ceremony which only includes a leaf with the class number in their pocket. The chapter unfolds the various kinds of people Aru encounters on her way. The other classmates were different AND weird! Some of them had three heads and the others had three hands. However, this couldn’t demotivate Aru to find a pretty boy in her class, which she eventually found sitting across from her, with a sleepy head, ready to snore and sleep away.
Refund High School Chapter 5 ends with Aru Kim admiring the pretty boy in her class. She was also admiring the history teacher who was teaching the not-so-interested students. This chapter could’ve had a better ending which would have left people curious about what happens next. However, because the introduction to the other world needed its own pace, we’ll give that point to the writer. I am still hinged to the story, so far so good, let’s see what the upcoming chapters uphold!
