Hand Jumper Chapter 11: Cell Four’s Coffee Break

Juni Chang and Sayeon Lee (Hand Jumper Chapter 11-20)
Juni Chang and Sayeon Lee (Hand Jumper Chapter 11-20)

Hand Jumper Chapter 11 begins as Juni taunts the criminal she’d caught within the grasp of her blue essence ribbons. Raising him higher and higher above the ground, she threatens to drop him onto the sidewalk. Sayeon arrives behind her and, putting a hand on her shoulder, asks her to stop. Although Juni concedes, she explains that she’s legally allowed to kill the man, since he’d attacked her using the drug, Rapture.

Terrified and outnumbered by the Aberrant group, the man hurriedly decides to give them information. He explains all that he knows about an abandoned toy warehouse that was converted into a Rapture dropoff point. Juni absorbs the information with interest. However, instead of immediately rushing to the nearby warehouse, she drops the matter and buys coffee for cell four.

Sayeon- well, you can expect her reaction- sits in numb shock and frustration. Interrupting the budding friendship between Riyujin and Juni, Sayeon interjects about investigating the warehouse. Since Rapture was made by draining essence from living beings, it directly caused the suffering of others. Moreover, unlike Aberrant tolerance, normal bodies weren’t equipped to cope with the addiction of extra essence. Despite the grave implications, no one except Sayeon seems to care. She angrily chugs her hot coffee and walks away from her cell.

Never Meet Your Heroes

Standing on an empty street outside the cafe, Sayeon flashes back to the heated conversation she’d had with her sister before she’d left home. She’d spoken strongly against her sister’s villainous actions and resolutely defended the moral and just functioning of the Corps. “They’d only dispose of people who truly, truly deserve it,” she’d quoted. However, Juni’s readiness to kill the man from before, who was a minor threat at best, had shaken Sayeon’s naive, stubborn opinion. Although she doesn’t believe Juni would’ve followed through, the thought that Aberrant officers may not be the righteous law enforcers that she’d expected leaves her uncomfortable.

Randomly, a man with a bright red mask passes by Sayeon while she’s lost in thought and tells her to avoid the ‘interesting things’ in the ‘warehouse with the red roof’. Before she can question the man further- whether or not he was sent by Samin- he turns the street corner and disappears, concluding Chapter 11.

Hand Jumper Chapter 12: Time for a Rebellion

Sayeon Lee
Sayeon Lee

Hand Jumper Chapter 12 begins with a younger Sayeon who used to request her sister for the quintessential childish whims- adopting a stray cat, inviting a friend over, buying candy- but never to any luck. Samin always denied her little sister’s hopeful wishes. On Sayeon’s birthday, Samin found her crying on the stairs. Giving her a little red stuffed toy, she apologized for not letting her invite any friends. Passively, Sayeon had immediately accepted it- the same way she accepted every other decision Samin took- because she trusted her sister.

Ryujin snaps Sayeon out of her trip down memory lane and tells her to rejoin Juni and the others. She’d easily found Sayeon because she’d been wildly emanating essence, an effect of being intensely distressed. This information comes as a new revelation. It leads Sayeon to realize that her Aberrancy might’ve been detected by Officer Ahn before being tested… or even years prior by her sister.

Justice Crusading

Suddenly changing the topic, she inquires whether Ryujin would visit a place, even after being explicitly told otherwise. Ryujin, rebellious and obstinate as she is, confidently replies that she would. Her words seem to act as the final confirmation Sayeon needed.

Stepping down the stairs, Sayeon thinks about the red-masked man and her sister. ‘There’s a fine line between a warning and a challenge,’ she ruminates, and against the small part of her that says don’t do it, Sayeon continues to walk forward.

Her destination? The warehouse, of course.

Ryujin begins to shake with laughter, and exclaims that Sayeon is ‘not so boring after all’. Just to make a defiant statement against the Corps, she decides to tag along with Sayeon’s ‘justice crusade’.

Meanwhile, in the warehouse, a bloodied man sits tied to a chair. The pig-headed Aberrant, who’d previously murdered the prosectuor, looms in front of his tortured victim, concluding Chapter 12.

Hand Jumper Chapter 13 begins as the captive man expressively refuses to talk to the pig-masked Aberrant known as ‘The Butcher’, a member of the Begonia Group. However, the pig-man threatens to give him the same fate as his associates (brutal death) if he doesn’t give them information. He asks about Lilith, a Godling, which seems to genuinely baffle the man. Seconds away from being killed, one of the Butcher’s partners warns him of another Aberrant in the building.

Meanwhile, Sayeon (dubbed ‘Glasses’ by Ryujin) and Ryujin (newly christened ‘Baldie’ due to the “bald spot she hides under her cap”) casually stroll into the warehouse. Baldie… err, Ryujin asks Sayeon about her sudden, uncharacteristically risk-taking move. Explaining how she’d been destined to enter a top law school, Sayeon explains that her life’s work had been flushed down the drain. She didn’t impact anyone or anything anymore. So why should she care about being careful?

Hiding behind a crate, a masked man panics at the sight of two Aberrant officers. Minnie, the Butcher’s partner, had only detected one. Grasping his gun, he steeled himself. Even though he wanted to run, he knew that punishment by the Butcher would be worse. He sees the girls’ blue ties and realizes that they were no threat. Moreover, the baseball cap girl had just openly admitted that her power was currently out of commission.

He aims and takes his shot. BANG! A bullet flies through Ryujin’s skull, concluding Chapter 13.

Hand Jumper Chapter 14: A Second Chance

Sayeon Lee

Hand Jumper Chapter 14 begins as Juni cheerfully purchases a bag of gummies. Min suddenly seems off, which is noticed by Iseul.

Back in the warehouse, Sayeon stands straight. Shell-shocked, she remembers a similar moment in her past. Samin had asked her to look down at a bloodied man, at what she did. In the present, she looks down too. Ryujin’s bloody head and glassy eyes look back at her.

A gun clicks behind her head, and a male voice threatens to shoot if she activates her powers. Although the man begins interrogating her, Sayeon can’t register the words. Her head throbs as she chastises herself for naively trying to ‘make the world a better place’. Frustrated with no response from her, the man gets dangerously close to pulling the trigger. Suddenly, a blast of teal electricity crackles out from Sayeon.

Shockingly, Ryujin stands beside her again. She repeats her sentence from moments ago. Sayeon’s mind races with the impossibility of the fact that she was alive. Just in time, Sayeon recognizes the moment as the second she’d heard the bang. She tackles Ryujin to the ground, and a bullet whizzes past their heads.

They make a break for it. The man opens fire, and a bullet finds its mark in Sayeon’s thigh. She falls, which forces Ryujin to try persuading the man to let them go. However, the conversation starts going south, inching them closer and closer to the fate Sayeon had just saved Ryujin from. Lying on the ground, Sayeon tightens her fingers around a stray brick, concluding Chapter 14.

Hand Jumper Chapter 15: The Butcher Wins a Bet

Jiwook, Ryujin and Sayeon Lee (Hand Jumper Chapter 11-20)

Hand Jumper Chapter 15 begins as Sayeon slowly crouches behind the man. Ignoring the pain in her leg, she’s bolstered by the activated essence flowing through her. She begins to doubt her ability to deliberately injure someone, that too with a brick. But the second the man turns, she impulsively clocks him.

The man thuds to the floor, the daylight knocked out of him. Sayeon asks Ryujin if she’s fine, noticing that her bullet wound has disappeared. Ryujin grabs Sayeon’s hand and begins to drag her out of the warehouse.

It’s Not Over Yet

Halfway out, they hear a man calling out for help. Although Ryujin hesitates, Sayeon immediately walks towards the voice. “It wasn’t luck that saved us. It was me,” she tells her, remembering how she’d miraculously… turned back time?

Determined to finally make sense of her abilities, her new world, and her sister’s message, Sayeon doesn’t turn back to see if Ryujin cares to follow her. She tells her to leave. In her past, she’d once disobeyed Samin’s rules. As punishment, her sister had killed a man. Never wanting to cause such a disaster again, she’d always played it safe. Apart from Jaeil and her sister, she had close relationships. Between her intense studying and loneliness, she’d never had time for excitement, which is what activated her essence.

She pushes the door open and finds a bleeding man in front of her. Before she can help him, a rush of green aura drops on her like a heavy blow. The Butcher ominously appears behind her and smiles. He cheerfully strolls to the tortured man’s side and explains that they’d wagered a bet. If the person walking through the door had come to save him, he’d be free. If not, he’d kill them both.

Ryujin suddenly appears, angering Sayeon and surprising the Butcher. She tells Sayeon the obvious- the Aberrant was too strong for them. As the Butcher starts towards the kids, the injured man tells him to let the innocent children go free. Pausing, he turns around and slashes at him with his essence-sword, concluding Chapter 15.

Hand Jumper Chapter 16: Bye-Bye Big Brother

Jiwook and Sayeon Lee

Hand Jumper Chapter 16 begins as the Butcher cuts through the man’s neck. For a moment, nothing happens, and then his head blows up like a bomb. Ryujin shields Sayeon’s eyes from the horrific, headless body. The Butcher kicks it away and then approaches Sayeon. He leans down to examine her, and inquires whether she was ‘who he thought she was’. Sayeon’s heart begins pounding as she braces for death.

Instead, the Butcher pats her on the head and explains that she reminded him of his brother, who’d joined the Corps too. In the same way, Sayeon sees his sister in him, and remembers her similar belief in ‘necessary evils’.

She tells him that his murder was ‘unforgivable’ just as Ryujin chucks a handful of rubble at his face. He easily brushes the attack off, but she repeatedly pelts him with various objects nevertheless. Sayeon uses the distraction to dash away, and the Butcher remains where he stands. He shouts after them, making it clear that he hopes they leave the Corps, concluding Chapter 16.

Hand Jumper Chapter 17: Revenge on the Horizon

Hand Jumper Chapter 17 begins as Iseul and Juni debate whether Luke should’ve forgiven ‘Darth Fader’ (from some Hand Jumper version of Star Wars). Walking through the city streets, the Aberrant group generates much whispering among the other pedestrians.

Iseul tells Juni that they should be looking for Ryujin and Sayeon, while she complains that they didn’t know how to relax. She casually pops a gummy bear into her mouth- but Isuel levitates it away from her. He accuses her of attempting to get herself fired as cell four’s mentor so she could return to her comfortable and easy job as head of security. She feigns innocence, but wonders whether Iseul, who was, surprisingly, a lot more than a bubbly personality, would be a problem. Thankfully, Ryujin and Sayeon return before the tension rises.

They’d sprinted back, coughing and wheezing. But where Sayeon coughed up air, Ryujin coughed up blood. She’d activated her essence, and because the Corps had set her essence cuff to the maximum and put her in prison despite the complete drain of her energy, she still hadn’t recovered yet. Angrily, she rages about the way she’d been treated. Ryujin swears to kill every last Corps member, starting with Officer Ahn, once she regains her abilities.

Later that night, while everyone sleeps, Sayeon gets out of bed. Facing a wall clock, she activates her teal essence and decides to finally discover her abilities, concluding Chapter 17.

Hand Jumper Chapter 18: Time is of the Essence

Samin and Sayeon Lee

Hand Jumper Chapter 18 begins as Sayeon reflects on Ryujin’s thirst for revenge. Hearing her passionately describe her strong intent to make the Corps pay, Sayeon had wondered whether she’d accidentally caused a string of terrible events by saving Ryujin’s life.

She briefly thinks about the massive power she wields by being able to reverse time. Rather then think of the crippling responsibility and numerous negative outcomes, she becomes excited by the possibilities. If she discovered the extent of her time-altering abilities and learned how to wield them, it could mean that her dream of world justice hadn’t dissolved just yet. However, knowing that Aberrants rarely had the same abilities, Sayeon realizes that she has no teacher to look to for guidance… except her sister.

She flashes back to an instance from her past. The father of her friend, Juhyeong, had confronted Samin about the absence of their parents (who were long dead). He’d noticed how Sayeon spent all her time at their house and deduced that Samin wasn’t the age she pretended to be. She hadn’t been old enough to legally care for Sayeon. The well-intentioned man, Mr. Baek, had told them that he’d spared them by not calling the police.

Samin had known better. She’d done her research and run a background check on him. It’d turned out that Mr. Baek was a cop himself (and also ‘the most boring milk-toast nobody’). Samin had told Sayeon to go to her room while the ‘grown-ups’ talked further, signalling that things were about to get out of hand, when she’d refused. Little Sayeon had insisted on listening in on the conversation because of her curiosity. She’d obstinately ask her horrified sister where their mother was, concluding Chapter 18.

Hand Jumper Chapter 19: Just Like Clockwork

Samin and Sayeon Lee (Hand Jumper Chapter 11-20)
Samin and Sayeon Lee (Hand Jumper Chapter 11-20)

In Hand Jumper Chapter 19, Sayeon begins to explain her upbringing. When Samin was eleven, she’d taken the responsibility to care for her four-year-old sister. Sayeon had completely trusted her once wise and affectionate big sister. However, the day she’d brought up their mother in front of Mr. Baek, Samin became someone new. A person she didn’t associate with her caring guardian.

Bluntly, Samin had told her that their mother was never coming back. Even then, Sayeon had displayed remarkable maturity and patted her overwhelmed sister. She’d intuited that her big sister was in more pain than her. Mr. Baek had also attempted to offer empathy, explaining that, as a single father, he understood the hardship of solely raising a young kid. Samin had flared up her teal essence in anger, causing Mr. Baek to stagger backwards in shock. Only ten years old, Sayeon hadn’t understood the societal revulsion of Aberrants and Mr. Baek’s aggrandized response.

However, Samin had expected his reaction from the start. “You may not see it now,” she’d said, reaching towards him with her essence, “but you and I, Sayeon, were born special.”

Back in the present, Sayeon practices with her essence. With a snap, she rewinds time and stares at the hands of the clock. Though she doesn’t feel the difference, she notices that the second hand had jumped twenty seconds back in time, concluding Chapter 19.

Hand Jumper Chapter 20: The Time on Her Hands

Jaeil and Sayeon Lee (Hand Jumper Chapter 11-20)
Jaeil and Sayeon Lee (Hand Jumper Chapter 11-20)

Hand Jumper Chapter 20 begins as Sayeon wonders if repeatedly snapping can turn back time further than twenty seconds. She reactivates her ability too soon and becomes nauseous with the exertion. The feeling reminds her of when she’d run with Jaeil on an empty stomach and thrown up in the bushes. She takes a deep breath and lets her essence replenish.

When Sayeon snaps again, she realizes that she hadn’t gone further back in time, but had returned to the moment she’d started. This information tells her that she can keep rewinding time and create twenty-second time loops.

Sayeon performs another experiment. She bites her thumb and runs up to the gantry in the span of twenty seconds. When she snaps her fingers, she finds herself in the same spot she’d started at, with no sign of a bite mark on her thumb. Sayeon concludes that everything she rewinds past is deleted from the timeline, and only her memories are left remaining.

She reflects on all the other Aberrant abilities she knew of- creating swords, telekinesis, enhanced strength- and knows that her power is different. It isn’t strong on its own, so Sayeon would have to use tactics to become powerful. Perched on the auditorium floor, a sudden flashback takes her to an old interaction with Jaeil (cue sentimental music).

Out of the Loop

She’d been trying to tutor the hopeless student in math when he’d called her the smartest person he’d ever met. Jaeil had watched her explain how she believed that everything had rules- once you’d understood those, you could solve any problem in the world. Jaeil had seen beyond her being the school topper and had called her ‘capable’, like she ‘could figure out anything’. Then, after solving two and a half questions, he’d stood up and stretched. He’d offered to buy her fried chicken, while she, flabbergasted, followed him in protest.

Sayeon fondly thinks about him, ‘It’s nice to have someone like this. Someone who believes in me.’ She hugs her knees to her chest, sitting alone in the empty room-or so it seems. Unbeknownst to her, Min stands behind her back… holding a freshly baked bread in oven mittens. Clueless to his presence, Sayeon says to Jaeil, ‘I wish you were here’, concluding Chapter 20. [But seriously- who’s going to tell her about Jaeil?]
